Begin met een realistische planning
Veel stress ontstaat al vóór vertrek. Te veel kilometers per dag, te weinig rustmomenten en te hoge verwachtingen.
Probeer je reisdagen niet voller te proppen dan nodig. Vier tot zes uur rijden per dag is voor de meeste mensen meer dan genoeg. Zo hou je tijd over om onderweg te stoppen, iets te eten, een wandeling te maken of gewoon even niets te doen.

Het klinkt als de ultieme droom: een eigen stekkie voor weekends en vakanties, zonder telkens iets te huren of in een druk hotel te zitten. Maar voordat je die stap zet, is het slim om eerst goed na te denken.
Waarom een eigen boot of vakantiehuis aantrekkelijk is
Een eigen boot of vakantiehuis heeft veel aantrekkingskracht: het is jouw eigen plek om tot rust te komen, weg van dagelijkse beslommeringen. Je bepaalt zelf wanneer je gaat, met wie, en hoe lang je blijft. Voor veel reizigers voelt het als een rustpunt.
Tegelijkertijd is bezit geen vanzelfsprekendheid: het brengt verplichtingen en kosten mee die je niet moet onderschatten. Een vakantiehuis of boot is geen hotel of huurwoning. Dat is perfect voor mensen die houden van avontuur op het water en zich makkelijk kunnen aanpassen. Tegelijkertijd vraagt een boot intensief onderhoud, en zijn de jaarlijkse kosten vaak hoger dan verwacht. Zeker als je er niet zelf veel aan doet.

Reizen staat voor vrijheid. Geen vaste routine, geen agenda, alleen jij en de weg die zich ontvouwt. Toch weet elke reiziger dat echte vrijheid niet ontstaat uit chaos, maar uit overzicht. Wanneer je weet waar je bent, wat je nodig hebt en hoe je keuzes maakt, wordt reizen pas echt zorgeloos. Dat geldt voor alles onderweg: je route, je bagage, je geld en zelfs de manier waarop je met technologie omgaat. In een wereld waarin innovatie snel vooruitgaat draait vrijheid steeds meer om inzicht.
De voorbereiding als fundament
Spontaan reizen klinkt romantisch, maar zelfs de meest vrije avonturier plant bewust. Een goede voorbereiding betekent niet dat je alles vastlegt, maar dat je ruimte creëert voor improvisatie. [message] => De Boston à St.Pierre et Miquelon
Boston nous a beaucoup plu. Je suis gêné de vous dire que c'est parce que cela ressemble plus à l'Europe. De notre marina nous avons à nouveau un ferry, le Walkyrie, qui nous dépose en plein centre: pratique! Notre Michelin vert à la main, Nicole nous entraine sur le Freedom Trail visiter la maison de Paul Revere (un type qui a joué un rôle important dans la lutte pour l'indépendance en 1775-76), le Old State house dont le balcon a eu l'honneur d'abriter la première lecture publique de l'Indépendance des Etats-Unis le 4 juillet 1776 après avoir été le témoin du massacre de Boston par les Anglais. Nous recevons un cours d'histoire sur l'indépendance dans les lieux même où cela s'est déroulé.
Après un excellent déjeuner dans le quartier Italien du North end, nous nous promenons dans Beacon Hill pour y admirer les demeures victoriennes aux jardinières colorées du 19ème.
Le Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum reçoit notre palme d'or. Cette New yorkaise extravagante devenue Bostonienne par mariage, a défrayé la chronique mondaine puritaine par ses excentricités à la fin du 19ème siècle. Elle érigea un palais Vénitien du 15ème siècle qui héberge tellement de trésors de l'art Européen et Américain qu'on a l'impression d'entrer chez un antiquaire de haut niveau mais ou rien est à vendre! Ce qui est remarquable est que les Isabel peuvent entrer gratuitement.
Et puis je n'échappe pas à l'énorme Museum of Fine Arts qui abrite des tableaux de Rogier van der Weyden, Rembrandt, Rubens, Manets, Monets, ...une pléthore de toiles des plus grands maitres...
Près de notre marina je vois un grand centre de Boston Scientific, une boite avec laquelle j'ai travaillé souvent en chirurgie: nostalgie fous-moi la paix!
Le 15/5 nous mettons les voiles sur le Cape Ann, premier stop: Gloucester, le port de pêche le plus ancien des Amériques, où le peintre Edward Hopper vint chercher l'inspiration. Et puis Rockport, un village délicieux avec de petites boutiques tenues par des artistes et où nous sd'excellents homards.
Cap sur Halifax au Canada, goodbye Trumpland. A nous le froid, le brouillard et la pluie! Mais pas tout de suite car notre départ se fait sur une mer plate entourés par des dizaines de baleines et de dauphins, le rêve!
Nous arrivons après 3 jours et 2 nuits dans le prestigieux Royal Nova Scottia Yacht Squadron, un club de voile à l'Anglaise. Nous nous demandons qui veut habiter ici! Le Commodore vient nous accueillir et me demande de donner une conférence sur le tour du monde de LJ à la réunion hebdomadaire des membres. J'accepte volontiers et suis immédiatement promu comme le Captain Jack from the big catamaran. Un des membres, Greg, vient me saluer et m'apprend que c'est lui qui a acheté mon Catalina: "the world is a village"! Nous visitons Halifax sous la pluie avec mon ami et collègue Patrice de Marseille qui nous a rejoints. Je suis très content qu'il a accepté mon invitation, comme Nicole nous quitte pour rentrer en Belgique en avion.
Le 25 mai la météo est favorable et nous traversons sous voiles et moteurs les 350 Nm pour rejoindre le mystérieux Saint Pierre et Miquelon, cette enclave Française dans le New Foundland Canadien. Ce sera le point le plus septentrional de notre tour de l'Atlantique. Nous y sommes accueillis comme la surprise du printemps ! La télé locale vient nous interviewer et je laisse le soin à Nicole d'expliquer ce que nous sommes bien venus faire ici?!
Demain, le 29/5, nous quitterons cette bourgade glaciale du bout du monde pour la traversée retour de l'Atlantique par les Açores.

Visums ook en erg belangrijk de creditcard. Nu nog even intens kroelen met de thuis blijvers. We gaan ze vreselijk missen. Naar schatting zijn we over een half jaar weer thuis.

[message] => We zitten aan boord met een Franse Bordeaux en een lekker stokbroodje met kaas, want we zijn in Frankrijk. Dat klinkt misschien een beetje raar, maar onder New Foundland liggen 2 kleine Franse eilandjes, St Pierre en Miquelon, 2 echte stukjes Frankrijk.
In de Bras d’Or lakes wilde het geen mooi weer worden, veel mist en motregen. We zijn na een paar dagen in St Peters bij een marmerberg voor anker gegaan en de volgende dag naar Baddeck. Graham Bell, de uitvinder van de telefoon, heeft in Baddeck gewoond, er is nu het Alexander Graham Bell museum. Het is een leuk museum wat allerlei dingen laat zien en uitlegt over uitvindingen en experimenten waar hij mee bezig is geweest zoals het ontwikkelen van een vliegtuig begin 1900 en later de draagvleugelboot.
In Cape Breton wonen nog veel afstammelingen van Kelten en er zijn dorpen waar mensen nog Gaelic praten. Vioolmuziek, iets wat op Ierse volksmuziek lijkt, is hier populair en we zijn naar een concert geweest van een duo dat gitaar en viool speelde. Aan het eind van de avond liet de violiste een dans zien, ook op vioolmuziek, het vereist snel voetenwerk. Wel grappig dat men de tradities zo in ere houdt.
We hebben een auto gehuurd om de Cabot trail te rijden, een route die langs de kust van de bergachtige noordwest hoek van Cape Breton loopt en door het Cape Breton Highland Park. We vertrokken ’s ochtends met mistig weer en het ging nog even motregenen, we waren bang dat we weinig van de mooie uitzichten zouden zien. Maar gelukkig klaarde het op nadat we de eerste berg over waren. We stopten ergens bij een mooie rivier. Er was een man aan het vissen, hij had net een forel aan de haak, en Ivo heeft hem geholpen de vis in een net op te vangen. Eenmaal aan de westkust werd het prachtig helder weer, het werd zelfs warm. In Chéticamp, een Franstalig dorp, zijn we gestopt voor de lunch. Eenmaal in het Cape Breton Highland park reden we over de klippen aan de kust. Er waren overal schitterende uitzichten en bij één uitzichtpunt konden we 2 walvissen in zee zien zwemmen en we zagen ze spuiten. In de bergen leven elanden, maar wij hebben alleen verse sporen van elanden gezien. Door de bergen reden we naar de oostkust waar het een beetje mistig werd, maar we hadden gelukkig toch nog wat uitzicht.
Van Cape Breton wilden we in één keer naar deze Franse eilanden zeilen. De windvoorspellingen waren gunstig en we zouden er 2 dagen en een nacht over doen.
Helaas hield de wind zich niet aan de voorspellingen en moest de eerste dag ’s middags de motor al aan. Er was de hele nacht en ochtend mist, weinig zicht en geen wind. Rond het middaguur begon het opeens stevig te waaien, en het klaarde helemaal op. We zagen de zuidkust van New Foundland liggen. Maar we hadden de wind van voren. Het was nog 32 mijl naar Miquelon, wel erg ver tegen de wind in op de motor. Daarom besloten we naar de Ramea islands te zeilen, kleine eilandjes dicht onder de zuidkust van New Foundland. Fijn om er met goed zicht naar binnen te kunnen lopen. We konden op Ramea in de haven aan een vissersboot liggen. Ramea zag er meteen erg leuk uit, echt zoals we ons een dorp in New Foundland hadden voorgesteld. Net als in heel New Foundland leefde men lange tijd van de kabeljauw visserij, maar de kabeljauw is voor het grootste gedeelte weggevist. In Ramea zijn de gebouwen van de niet meer in gebruik zijnde visverwerkende fabriek nog te zien. Er hebben 1400 mensen in het dorp gewoond, maar dat zijn er nu nog ongeveer 600. Er zijn nog wel een paar vissers, maar er is verder weinig werk.
We stonden de ochtend na aankomst op en de zon scheen, heerlijk na al die mist.
Het is in juni en juli aan de zuidkust van New Foundland overwegend mistig, dus dagen met zon zijn bijzonder. Hadden wij even geluk. Door het koude water (zo’n 8 graden) blijft het nog wel wat fris. Op Ramea had men in geen 2 weken zon gehad, dus de was werd buiten gehangen, en de schilderklusjes werden gedaan.
Wij gingen de berg naast de haven op, het was heel helder weer en we hadden een prachtig uitzicht. ’s Middags heb ik het hele eiland rond gelopen, een schitterende wandeltocht. Omdat veel stukken drassig zijn heeft men daar een planken pad (board walk) gemaakt. Aan de zuidkant van het eiland, bij de vuurtoren, kwam ik op het pad 4 mannen met kruiwagens met onderdelen voor de zendmast tegen. Er is geen weg naar de vuurtoren en ze moesten ongeveer een kilometer lopen via het planken pad. Men had niet verwacht dat het zulk mooi weer zou worden, anders had men de helikopter ingezet.
We hadden geen spijt dat we uitgeweken waren naar Ramea. Omdat men nog een paar dagen mooi weer voorspelde besloten we eerst een fjord in te gaan aan de zuidkust. De ochtend voor vertrek kwam Ewen, een jongen van 10, langs en stelde Ivo allerlei vragen over de boot en onze reis. Hij vond het leuk om aan boord te kijken. Zijn vader is van oorsprong Duitser en die schrijft stukjes voor de plaatselijke krant. Dus die kwam later langs om ons te interviewen. Hij heeft nog meer over zichzelf verteld dan wij over de Rebel en de reis. Het was wel een interessante man, die al van alles gedaan had. Wij zijn benieuwd of we nog in het plaatselijke suffertje komen, in dat geval krijgen we per email een exemplaar van het artikel.
We ontdekten nadat we bij Ramea vertrokken waren dat de elektronische zeekaart van dit gebied niet klopt, want we voeren over een eiland heen, en later over bergen. De elektronische zeekaart is een gedigitaliseerde versie van oude Engelse kaarten van dit gebied. De kaartenmakers van die tijd moesten het doen zonder GPS e.d. en dan zit je er al gauw een halve mijl naast, in een gebied met, wegens bewolking en mist, weinig zicht op hemellichamen om je exacte positie te bepalen.
New Foundland wordt “the rock” genoemd, omdat het één grote rots is. New Foundland heeft een driehoekige vorm met zijden van zo’n 550 kilometer. Er zijn allerlei fjorden en aan de oostkant baaien met eilanden.
Ramea ligt ongeveer 6 kilometer van de kust, dus we konden de kust al goed zien. Deze is 300 à 350 meter hoog en de bergen en klippen zien er indrukwekkend uit. Onze eerst fjord was Grey river. We moesten bij een relatief smalle doorgang naar binnen. Je vaart tussen grote bergen door. Er is een klein dorp aan de fjord, maar wij besloten verderop bij een strandje voor anker te gaan. We hadden een fantastisch uitzicht over bergen en klippen die op sommige stukken loodrecht naar beneden komen.
Op het strandje kwam een soort riviertje uit, en we hoorden het water stromen.
Tijdens het ontbijt de volgende ochtend zagen we 2 otters zwemmen. We zijn even naar de kant geroeid. Er zaten nare steekvliegen, die ons achtervolgden naar de boot. We hebben het anker opgehaald en zijn langs een prachtige kust naar Aviron bay, een fjord met een waterval gegaan. We konden voor de waterval voor anker. Het water komt getrapt zo’n 300 meter naar beneden vallen. Het was fantastisch om zo je eigen waterval te hebben en het geluid van vallend water de hele tijd te horen. We gingen even bij de waterval zelf kijken. Wel jammer dat op mooie plekken nare vliegende steekbeestjes moeten zijn. Na het vullen van wat flesjes water zo snel mogelijk terug naar de boot. Gelukkig stak er een fjordenwindje op en konden we ’s avonds ongestoord van de waterval genieten.
De wind was gunstig om naar Miquelon te zeilen, het was nog steeds zonnig weer. We hadden een heerlijk zeilwindje en het was een snelle toch.
We gingen de volgende ochtend de haven in om in te klaren, maar het was weekend, we hebben geen douane gezien.
Miquelon bestaat eigenlijk uit 2 eilanden die verbonden zijn door een strandwal met weg en het geheel is ongeveer 40 kilometer lang, met zo’n 700 inwoners.
Het is hier meteen helemaal Frans, de mensen zien er Frans uit en praten Frans en weinig Engels. Je betaald met de Euro en na de dure Californische wijn in Canada en de kaas zonder veel smaak, is een stokbroodje met lekkere kaas en een flesje Franse wijn niet te versmaden. Ivo kwam in contact met Simon, die zijn motorboot aan het schilderen was, hij liet Ivo de boot zien en vertelde dat hij z’n windmolen eraf had gehaald, omdat deze niet bevalt. Het is de nieuwe versie van onze windmolen, die met minder wind begint te draaien. Uiteindelijk hebben we de windmolen voor een schappelijke prijs van hem gekocht. In Miquelon kan je goeie zaken doen volgens Simon.
We zijn sinds gisteren op St Pierre. Dit eiland is kleiner dan Miquelon, maar er wonen meer mensen en het is toeristischer. We hadden een goede plek gevonden om te ankeren, voor een soort jachtclub, toen er iemand aan de kant schreeuwde dat we bij de jachtclub aan de kant moesten, we moesten inklaren. Op dat moment kwamen 2 mannen langzij om een praatje te maken en ze zijn naar de kant geroeid om onze lijnen op te vangen. We zaten net in de kuip met hun een biertje te drinken toen 4 douane mannen kwamen. Eén deed het schrijfwerk, en het was zo gebeurd. We waren verbaasd dat er later nog iemand van immigratie kwam, we kregen zelfs een stempel in ons paspoort.
We liggen nu voor anker en genieten even van al het Franse.
Morgen is het de 14 juli, de Franse revolutie wordt ook hier uitbundig gevierd, we zijn benieuwd.

Terwijl bij jullie Sinterklaas de hoek om komt, liggen hier de pepernoten nog steeds niet in de winkel.... Wel 1001 andere dingen.
Gistermorgen was ik in Sukothai, de oude hoofdstad van Thailand. Om de hitte en busladingen toeristen voor te zijn, en omdat ik vroeg in bed lag dus vroeg wakker, zat ik al om 6.15 om mijn gehuurde fiets! Een hele hoop 12e en 13e eeuwse tempels bezocht en overal heerlijk alleen. Ik was van plan om af te dingen op de prijs van de fiets, maar dat gaat niet echt met 20 baht; 40 cent voor een hele dag! Na 3 uur had ik er genoeg van, toen ik ontdekte dat ik ook een brommer/scooter kon huren! Wel 10 x zo duur, maar nog steeds spotgoedkoop dus! Heel de dag rondgecrost, meer dan 100 km, van tempel naar tempel. Foto's kan ik er nog niet van laten zien, want, geloof het of niet, ik kreeg stroom toen ik de fotokabel in de pc deed...
Terwijl ik zelf vaak geen zin heb in het lezen reisverhalen of -mails van mensen, merk ik dat het schrijven best leuk is. Dus mocht je dit niet lezen, ook prima! Sukkel! O, je leest toch verder :)
Vandaag in Chiang Mai aangekomen, noordelijke stad van waaruit 3daagse trekkings door de jungle worden georganiseerd. Dat ga ik dus doen! Morgen of overmorgen.

[message] => De Boston à St.Pierre et Miquelon
Boston nous a beaucoup plu. Je suis gêné de vous dire que c'est parce que cela ressemble plus à l'Europe. De notre marina nous avons à nouveau un ferry, le Walkyrie, qui nous dépose en plein centre: pratique! Notre Michelin vert à la main, Nicole nous entraine sur le Freedom Trail visiter la maison de Paul Revere (un type qui a joué un rôle important dans la lutte pour l'indépendance en 1775-76), le Old State house dont le balcon a eu l'honneur d'abriter la première lecture publique de l'Indépendance des Etats-Unis le 4 juillet 1776 après avoir été le témoin du massacre de Boston par les Anglais. Nous recevons un cours d'histoire sur l'indépendance dans les lieux même où cela s'est déroulé.
Après un excellent déjeuner dans le quartier Italien du North end, nous nous promenons dans Beacon Hill pour y admirer les demeures victoriennes aux jardinières colorées du 19ème.
Le Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum reçoit notre palme d'or. Cette New yorkaise extravagante devenue Bostonienne par mariage, a défrayé la chronique mondaine puritaine par ses excentricités à la fin du 19ème siècle. Elle érigea un palais Vénitien du 15ème siècle qui héberge tellement de trésors de l'art Européen et Américain qu'on a l'impression d'entrer chez un antiquaire de haut niveau mais ou rien est à vendre! Ce qui est remarquable est que les Isabel peuvent entrer gratuitement.
Et puis je n'échappe pas à l'énorme Museum of Fine Arts qui abrite des tableaux de Rogier van der Weyden, Rembrandt, Rubens, Manets, Monets, ...une pléthore de toiles des plus grands maitres...
Près de notre marina je vois un grand centre de Boston Scientific, une boite avec laquelle j'ai travaillé souvent en chirurgie: nostalgie fous-moi la paix!
Le 15/5 nous mettons les voiles sur le Cape Ann, premier stop: Gloucester, le port de pêche le plus ancien des Amériques, où le peintre Edward Hopper vint chercher l'inspiration. Et puis Rockport, un village délicieux avec de petites boutiques tenues par des artistes et où nous sd'excellents homards.
Cap sur Halifax au Canada, goodbye Trumpland. A nous le froid, le brouillard et la pluie! Mais pas tout de suite car notre départ se fait sur une mer plate entourés par des dizaines de baleines et de dauphins, le rêve!
Nous arrivons après 3 jours et 2 nuits dans le prestigieux Royal Nova Scottia Yacht Squadron, un club de voile à l'Anglaise. Nous nous demandons qui veut habiter ici! Le Commodore vient nous accueillir et me demande de donner une conférence sur le tour du monde de LJ à la réunion hebdomadaire des membres. J'accepte volontiers et suis immédiatement promu comme le Captain Jack from the big catamaran. Un des membres, Greg, vient me saluer et m'apprend que c'est lui qui a acheté mon Catalina: "the world is a village"! Nous visitons Halifax sous la pluie avec mon ami et collègue Patrice de Marseille qui nous a rejoints. Je suis très content qu'il a accepté mon invitation, comme Nicole nous quitte pour rentrer en Belgique en avion.
Le 25 mai la météo est favorable et nous traversons sous voiles et moteurs les 350 Nm pour rejoindre le mystérieux Saint Pierre et Miquelon, cette enclave Française dans le New Foundland Canadien. Ce sera le point le plus septentrional de notre tour de l'Atlantique. Nous y sommes accueillis comme la surprise du printemps ! La télé locale vient nous interviewer et je laisse le soin à Nicole d'expliquer ce que nous sommes bien venus faire ici?!
Demain, le 29/5, nous quitterons cette bourgade glaciale du bout du monde pour la traversée retour de l'Atlantique par les Açores.

[message] => Na maanden voorbereiding gaan we vandaag dan eindelijk vertrekken als eerste mensen op de tandem naar saint pierre and miquelon! Paspoorten liggen klaar. Visums ook en erg belangrijk de creditcard. Nu nog even intens kroelen met de thuis blijvers. We gaan ze vreselijk missen. Naar schatting zijn we over een half jaar weer thuis.

[message] => We zitten aan boord met een Franse Bordeaux en een lekker stokbroodje met kaas, want we zijn in Frankrijk. Dat klinkt misschien een beetje raar, maar onder New Foundland liggen 2 kleine Franse eilandjes, St Pierre en Miquelon, 2 echte stukjes Frankrijk.
In de Bras d’Or lakes wilde het geen mooi weer worden, veel mist en motregen. We zijn na een paar dagen in St Peters bij een marmerberg voor anker gegaan en de volgende dag naar Baddeck. Graham Bell, de uitvinder van de telefoon, heeft in Baddeck gewoond, er is nu het Alexander Graham Bell museum. Het is een leuk museum wat allerlei dingen laat zien en uitlegt over uitvindingen en experimenten waar hij mee bezig is geweest zoals het ontwikkelen van een vliegtuig begin 1900 en later de draagvleugelboot.
In Cape Breton wonen nog veel afstammelingen van Kelten en er zijn dorpen waar mensen nog Gaelic praten. Vioolmuziek, iets wat op Ierse volksmuziek lijkt, is hier populair en we zijn naar een concert geweest van een duo dat gitaar en viool speelde. Aan het eind van de avond liet de violiste een dans zien, ook op vioolmuziek, het vereist snel voetenwerk. Wel grappig dat men de tradities zo in ere houdt.
We hebben een auto gehuurd om de Cabot trail te rijden, een route die langs de kust van de bergachtige noordwest hoek van Cape Breton loopt en door het Cape Breton Highland Park. We vertrokken ’s ochtends met mistig weer en het ging nog even motregenen, we waren bang dat we weinig van de mooie uitzichten zouden zien. Maar gelukkig klaarde het op nadat we de eerste berg over waren. We stopten ergens bij een mooie rivier. Er was een man aan het vissen, hij had net een forel aan de haak, en Ivo heeft hem geholpen de vis in een net op te vangen. Eenmaal aan de westkust werd het prachtig helder weer, het werd zelfs warm. In Chéticamp, een Franstalig dorp, zijn we gestopt voor de lunch. Eenmaal in het Cape Breton Highland park reden we over de klippen aan de kust. Er waren overal schitterende uitzichten en bij één uitzichtpunt konden we 2 walvissen in zee zien zwemmen en we zagen ze spuiten. In de bergen leven elanden, maar wij hebben alleen verse sporen van elanden gezien. Door de bergen reden we naar de oostkust waar het een beetje mistig werd, maar we hadden gelukkig toch nog wat uitzicht.
Van Cape Breton wilden we in één keer naar deze Franse eilanden zeilen. De windvoorspellingen waren gunstig en we zouden er 2 dagen en een nacht over doen.

We gingen even bij de waterval zelf kijken. Wel jammer dat op mooie plekken nare vliegende steekbeestjes moeten zijn. Na het vullen van wat flesjes water zo snel mogelijk terug naar de boot. Gelukkig stak er een fjordenwindje op en konden we ’s avonds ongestoord van de waterval genieten.
De wind was gunstig om naar Miquelon te zeilen, het was nog steeds zonnig weer. We hadden een heerlijk zeilwindje en het was een snelle toch.
We gingen de volgende ochtend de haven in om in te klaren, maar het was weekend, we hebben geen douane gezien.
Miquelon bestaat eigenlijk uit 2 eilanden die verbonden zijn door een strandwal met weg en het geheel is ongeveer 40 kilometer lang, met zo’n 700 inwoners.
Het is hier meteen helemaal Frans, de mensen zien er Frans uit en praten Frans en weinig Engels. Je betaald met de Euro en na de dure Californische wijn in Canada en de kaas zonder veel smaak, is een stokbroodje met lekkere kaas en een flesje Franse wijn niet te versmaden. Ivo kwam in contact met Simon, die zijn motorboot aan het schilderen was, hij liet Ivo de boot zien en vertelde dat hij z’n windmolen eraf had gehaald, omdat deze niet bevalt. Het is de nieuwe versie van onze windmolen, die met minder wind begint te draaien. Uiteindelijk hebben we de windmolen voor een schappelijke prijs van hem gekocht. In Miquelon kan je goeie zaken doen volgens Simon.
We zijn sinds gisteren op St Pierre. Dit eiland is kleiner dan Miquelon, maar er wonen meer mensen en het is toeristischer. We hadden een goede plek gevonden om te ankeren, voor een soort jachtclub, toen er iemand aan de kant schreeuwde dat we bij de jachtclub aan de kant moesten, we moesten inklaren. Op dat moment kwamen 2 mannen langzij om een praatje te maken en ze zijn naar de kant geroeid om onze lijnen op te vangen. We zaten net in de kuip met hun een biertje te drinken toen 4 douane mannen kwamen. Eén deed het schrijfwerk, en het was zo gebeurd. We waren verbaasd dat er later nog iemand van immigratie kwam, we kregen zelfs een stempel in ons paspoort.
We liggen nu voor anker en genieten even van al het Franse.
Morgen is het de 14 juli, de Franse revolutie wordt ook hier uitbundig gevierd, we zijn benieuwd.

Terwijl bij jullie Sinterklaas de hoek om komt, liggen hier de pepernoten nog steeds niet in de winkel.... Wel 1001 andere dingen.
Gistermorgen was ik in Sukothai, de oude hoofdstad van Thailand. Om de hitte en busladingen toeristen voor te zijn, en omdat ik vroeg in bed lag dus vroeg wakker, zat ik al om 6.15 om mijn gehuurde fiets! Een hele hoop 12e en 13e eeuwse tempels bezocht en overal heerlijk alleen. Ik was van plan om af te dingen op de prijs van de fiets, maar dat gaat niet echt met 20 baht; 40 cent voor een hele dag! Na 3 uur had ik er genoeg van, toen ik ontdekte dat ik ook een brommer/scooter kon huren! Wel 10 x zo duur, maar nog steeds spotgoedkoop dus! Heel de dag rondgecrost, meer dan 100 km, van tempel naar tempel. Foto's kan ik er nog niet van laten zien, want, geloof het of niet, ik kreeg stroom toen ik de fotokabel in de pc deed...
Terwijl ik zelf vaak geen zin heb in het lezen reisverhalen of -mails van mensen, merk ik dat het schrijven best leuk is. Dus mocht je dit niet lezen, ook prima! Sukkel! O, je leest toch verder :)
Vandaag in Chiang Mai aangekomen, noordelijke stad van waaruit 3daagse trekkings door de jungle worden georganiseerd. Dat ga ik dus doen! Morgen of overmorgen.

[message] => De Boston à St.Pierre et Miquelon
Boston nous a beaucoup plu. Je suis gêné de vous dire que c'est parce que cela ressemble plus à l'Europe. De notre marina nous avons à nouveau un ferry, le Walkyrie, qui nous dépose en plein centre: pratique! Notre Michelin vert à la main, Nicole nous entraine sur le Freedom Trail visiter la maison de Paul Revere (un type qui a joué un rôle important dans la lutte pour l'indépendance en 1775-76), le Old State house dont le balcon a eu l'honneur d'abriter la première lecture publique de l'Indépendance des Etats-Unis le 4 juillet 1776 après avoir été le témoin du massacre de Boston par les Anglais. Nous recevons un cours d'histoire sur l'indépendance dans les lieux même où cela s'est déroulé.
Après un excellent déjeuner dans le quartier Italien du North end, nous nous promenons dans Beacon Hill pour y admirer les demeures victoriennes aux jardinières colorées du 19ème.
Le Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum reçoit notre palme d'or. Cette New yorkaise extravagante devenue Bostonienne par mariage, a défrayé la chronique mondaine puritaine par ses excentricités à la fin du 19ème siècle. Elle érigea un palais Vénitien du 15ème siècle qui héberge tellement de trésors de l'art Européen et Américain qu'on a l'impression d'entrer chez un antiquaire de haut niveau mais ou rien est à vendre! Ce qui est remarquable est que les Isabel peuvent entrer gratuitement.
Et puis je n'échappe pas à l'énorme Museum of Fine Arts qui abrite des tableaux de Rogier van der Weyden, Rembrandt, Rubens, Manets, Monets, ...une pléthore de toiles des plus grands maitres...
Près de notre marina je vois un grand centre de Boston Scientific, une boite avec laquelle j'ai travaillé souvent en chirurgie: nostalgie fous-moi la paix!
Le 15/5 nous mettons les voiles sur le Cape Ann, premier stop: Gloucester, le port de pêche le plus ancien des Amériques, où le peintre Edward Hopper vint chercher l'inspiration. Et puis Rockport, un village délicieux avec de petites boutiques tenues par des artistes et où nous sd'excellents homards.
Cap sur Halifax au Canada, goodbye Trumpland. A nous le froid, le brouillard et la pluie! Mais pas tout de suite car notre départ se fait sur une mer plate entourés par des dizaines de baleines et de dauphins, le rêve!
Nous arrivons après 3 jours et 2 nuits dans le prestigieux Royal Nova Scottia Yacht Squadron, un club de voile à l'Anglaise. Nous nous demandons qui veut habiter ici! Le Commodore vient nous accueillir et me demande de donner une conférence sur le tour du monde de LJ à la réunion hebdomadaire des membres. J'accepte volontiers et suis immédiatement promu comme le Captain Jack from the big catamaran. Un des membres, Greg, vient me saluer et m'apprend que c'est lui qui a acheté mon Catalina: "the world is a village"! Nous visitons Halifax sous la pluie avec mon ami et collègue Patrice de Marseille qui nous a rejoints. Je suis très content qu'il a accepté mon invitation, comme Nicole nous quitte pour rentrer en Belgique en avion.
Le 25 mai la météo est favorable et nous traversons sous voiles et moteurs les 350 Nm pour rejoindre le mystérieux Saint Pierre et Miquelon, cette enclave Française dans le New Foundland Canadien. Ce sera le point le plus septentrional de notre tour de l'Atlantique. Nous y sommes accueillis comme la surprise du printemps ! La télé locale vient nous interviewer et je laisse le soin à Nicole d'expliquer ce que nous sommes bien venus faire ici?!
Demain, le 29/5, nous quitterons cette bourgade glaciale du bout du monde pour la traversée retour de l'Atlantique par les Açores.

[message] => Na maanden voorbereiding gaan we vandaag dan eindelijk vertrekken als eerste mensen op de tandem naar saint pierre and miquelon! Paspoorten liggen klaar. Visums ook en erg belangrijk de creditcard. Nu nog even intens kroelen met de thuis blijvers. We gaan ze vreselijk missen. Naar schatting zijn we over een half jaar weer thuis.

[title] => De rots en even in Frankrijk
[message] => We zitten aan boord met een Franse Bordeaux en een lekker stokbroodje met kaas, want we zijn in Frankrijk. Dat klinkt misschien een beetje raar, maar onder New Foundland liggen 2 kleine Franse eilandjes, St Pierre en Miquelon, 2 echte stukjes Frankrijk.
In de Bras d’Or lakes wilde het geen mooi weer worden, veel mist en motregen. We zijn na een paar dagen in St Peters bij een marmerberg voor anker gegaan en de volgende dag naar Baddeck. Graham Bell, de uitvinder van de telefoon, heeft in Baddeck gewoond, er is nu het Alexander Graham Bell museum. Het is een leuk museum wat allerlei dingen laat zien en uitlegt over uitvindingen en experimenten waar hij mee bezig is geweest zoals het ontwikkelen van een vliegtuig begin 1900 en later de draagvleugelboot.
In Cape Breton wonen nog veel afstammelingen van Kelten en er zijn dorpen waar mensen nog Gaelic praten. Vioolmuziek, iets wat op Ierse volksmuziek lijkt, is hier populair en we zijn naar een concert geweest van een duo dat gitaar en viool speelde. Aan het eind van de avond liet de violiste een dans zien, ook op vioolmuziek, het vereist snel voetenwerk. Wel grappig dat men de tradities zo in ere houdt.
We hebben een auto gehuurd om de Cabot trail te rijden, een route die langs de kust van de bergachtige noordwest hoek van Cape Breton loopt en door het Cape Breton Highland Park. We vertrokken ’s ochtends met mistig weer en het ging nog even motregenen, we waren bang dat we weinig van de mooie uitzichten zouden zien. Maar gelukkig klaarde het op nadat we de eerste berg over waren. We stopten ergens bij een mooie rivier. Er was een man aan het vissen, hij had net een forel aan de haak, en Ivo heeft hem geholpen de vis in een net op te vangen. Eenmaal aan de westkust werd het prachtig helder weer, het werd zelfs warm. In Chéticamp, een Franstalig dorp, zijn we gestopt voor de lunch. Eenmaal in het Cape Breton Highland park reden we over de klippen aan de kust. Er waren overal schitterende uitzichten en bij één uitzichtpunt konden we 2 walvissen in zee zien zwemmen en we zagen ze spuiten. In de bergen leven elanden, maar wij hebben alleen verse sporen van elanden gezien. Door de bergen reden we naar de oostkust waar het een beetje mistig werd, maar we hadden gelukkig toch nog wat uitzicht.
Van Cape Breton wilden we in één keer naar deze Franse eilanden zeilen. De windvoorspellingen waren gunstig en we zouden er 2 dagen en een nacht over doen.
Helaas hield de wind zich niet aan de voorspellingen en moest de eerste dag ’s middags de motor al aan. Er was de hele nacht en ochtend mist, weinig zicht en geen wind. Rond het middaguur begon het opeens stevig te waaien, en het klaarde helemaal op. We zagen de zuidkust van New Foundland liggen. Maar we hadden de wind van voren. Het was nog 32 mijl naar Miquelon, wel erg ver tegen de wind in op de motor. Daarom besloten we naar de Ramea islands te zeilen, kleine eilandjes dicht onder de zuidkust van New Foundland. Fijn om er met goed zicht naar binnen te kunnen lopen. We konden op Ramea in de haven aan een vissersboot liggen. Ramea zag er meteen erg leuk uit, echt zoals we ons een dorp in New Foundland hadden voorgesteld. Net als in heel New Foundland leefde men lange tijd van de kabeljauw visserij, maar de kabeljauw is voor het grootste gedeelte weggevist. In Ramea zijn de gebouwen van de niet meer in gebruik zijnde visverwerkende fabriek nog te zien. Er hebben 1400 mensen in het dorp gewoond, maar dat zijn er nu nog ongeveer 600. Er zijn nog wel een paar vissers, maar er is verder weinig werk.
We stonden de ochtend na aankomst op en de zon scheen, heerlijk na al die mist.
Het is in juni en juli aan de zuidkust van New Foundland overwegend mistig, dus dagen met zon zijn bijzonder. Hadden wij even geluk. Door het koude water (zo’n 8 graden) blijft het nog wel wat fris. Op Ramea had men in geen 2 weken zon gehad, dus de was werd buiten gehangen, en de schilderklusjes werden gedaan.
Wij gingen de berg naast de haven op, het was heel helder weer en we hadden een prachtig uitzicht. ’s Middags heb ik het hele eiland rond gelopen, een schitterende wandeltocht. Omdat veel stukken drassig zijn heeft men daar een planken pad (board walk) gemaakt. Aan de zuidkant van het eiland, bij de vuurtoren, kwam ik op het pad 4 mannen met kruiwagens met onderdelen voor de zendmast tegen. Er is geen weg naar de vuurtoren en ze moesten ongeveer een kilometer lopen via het planken pad. Men had niet verwacht dat het zulk mooi weer zou worden, anders had men de helikopter ingezet.
We hadden geen spijt dat we uitgeweken waren naar Ramea. Omdat men nog een paar dagen mooi weer voorspelde besloten we eerst een fjord in te gaan aan de zuidkust. De ochtend voor vertrek kwam Ewen, een jongen van 10, langs en stelde Ivo allerlei vragen over de boot en onze reis. Hij vond het leuk om aan boord te kijken. Zijn vader is van oorsprong Duitser en die schrijft stukjes voor de plaatselijke krant. Dus die kwam later langs om ons te interviewen. Hij heeft nog meer over zichzelf verteld dan wij over de Rebel en de reis. Het was wel een interessante man, die al van alles gedaan had. Wij zijn benieuwd of we nog in het plaatselijke suffertje komen, in dat geval krijgen we per email een exemplaar van het artikel.
We ontdekten nadat we bij Ramea vertrokken waren dat de elektronische zeekaart van dit gebied niet klopt, want we voeren over een eiland heen, en later over bergen. De elektronische zeekaart is een gedigitaliseerde versie van oude Engelse kaarten van dit gebied. De kaartenmakers van die tijd moesten het doen zonder GPS e.d. en dan zit je er al gauw een halve mijl naast, in een gebied met, wegens bewolking en mist, weinig zicht op hemellichamen om je exacte positie te bepalen.
New Foundland wordt “the rock” genoemd, omdat het één grote rots is. New Foundland heeft een driehoekige vorm met zijden van zo’n 550 kilometer. Er zijn allerlei fjorden en aan de oostkant baaien met eilanden.
Ramea ligt ongeveer 6 kilometer van de kust, dus we konden de kust al goed zien. Deze is 300 à 350 meter hoog en de bergen en klippen zien er indrukwekkend uit. Onze eerst fjord was Grey river. We moesten bij een relatief smalle doorgang naar binnen. Je vaart tussen grote bergen door. Er is een klein dorp aan de fjord, maar wij besloten verderop bij een strandje voor anker te gaan. We hadden een fantastisch uitzicht over bergen en klippen die op sommige stukken loodrecht naar beneden komen.
Op het strandje kwam een soort riviertje uit, en we hoorden het water stromen.
Tijdens het ontbijt de volgende ochtend zagen we 2 otters zwemmen. We zijn even naar de kant geroeid. Er zaten nare steekvliegen, die ons achtervolgden naar de boot. We hebben het anker opgehaald en zijn langs een prachtige kust naar Aviron bay, een fjord met een waterval gegaan. We konden voor de waterval voor anker. Het water komt getrapt zo’n 300 meter naar beneden vallen. Het was fantastisch om zo je eigen waterval te hebben en het geluid van vallend water de hele tijd te horen. Heel de dag rondgecrost, meer dan 100 km, van tempel naar tempel. Foto's kan ik er nog niet van laten zien, want, geloof het of niet, ik kreeg stroom toen ik de fotokabel in de pc deed...
Terwijl ik zelf vaak geen zin heb in het lezen reisverhalen of -mails van mensen, merk ik dat het schrijven best leuk is. Dus mocht je dit niet lezen, ook prima! Sukkel! O, je leest toch verder :)
Vandaag in Chiang Mai aangekomen, noordelijke stad van waaruit 3daagse trekkings door de jungle worden georganiseerd. Dat ga ik dus doen! Morgen of overmorgen.

En afdingen zouden ze in Nederland ook moeten invoeren. Maar daar komen dan natuurlijk weer invoerrechten op...
