Spanje is een populair vakantieland onder Nederlanders. Elke zomer weer vieren veel mensen vakantie in dit Zuid-Europese land. Niet gek, want je vindt er zon, zee en strand. Je kunt er lekker ontspannen en ook nog eens genieten van heerlijk eten. Denk je erover na om komende zomer zelf op vakantie te gaan naar Spanje? Plan je reis van goed. Wij vertellen je hier wat je vooraf moet weten, zodat je niet voor verrassingen komt te staan.
Kies een regio die bij je past
Bij een vakantie naar Spanje denken veel mensen al snel aan de Costa Brava, Costa del Sol, Costa Barcelona of één van de andere Costa's. Als je van zon, zee en strand houdt, is het hier goed vertoeven. Het kan er alleen zwart zien van de toeristen, zeker in de zomermaanden. Houd je meer van rust? Dan is een vakantie in het binnenland misschien meer iets voor jou. Hier is het over het algemeen een stuk rustiger dan aan de kust.
Houd rekening met de reistijd
Wil je met je kinderen op vakantie naar Spanje? Grote kans dat je in de zomer gaat, want je zit vast aan de schoolvakanties. Het is er vaak een drukte van belang, want mensen uit heel Europa trekken dan naar Spanje. Dit komt vooral doordat je er zekerheid hebt op mooi weer. Als je van levendigheid houdt en zongarantie wilt, is de zomer de beste tijd om naar Spanje te reizen.
Houd je niet van massatoerisme of heb je het al snel warm? En zit je ook niet vast aan schoolvakanties? Dan is het voor- of najaar een betere tijd om vakantie te vieren in Spanje. Het is er dan een stuk rustiger en ook minder warm. Bijkomend voordeel is dat je in deze periodes vaak ook minder betaalt voor een vakantie naar Spanje.
Stel je budget vast
Voordat je begint met het plannen van een vakantie naar Spanje, is het slim om een budget vast te stellen. Je bespaart je zelf zo veel tijd en moeite. Als je op voorhand al weet dat een vakantie te duur is, hoef je er ook niet naar te kijken. Wil je naar Spanje op vakantie met TUI? Kies dit land dan als bestemming, geef aan wanneer je weg wilt en kies het aantal personen dat meegaat. Bij het aanbod zie je vervolgens de prijs staan. Hierdoor weet je direct of een vakantie binnen je budget valt of niet.
Denk na over het vervoer
Veel mensen reizen met het vliegtuig naar Spanje. Dit komt vooral doordat je met de auto al snel een dag onderweg bent. Vanuit Utrecht is het 14 tot 18 uur rijden tot de grensregio. Wil je naar het zuiden? Dan ben je al snel meer dan 20 uur onderweg. Met het vliegtuig sta je binnen een paar uur in Spanje. Als je tijdens je vakantie veel wilt zien, kun je eventueel een auto huren. Je kunt dan gaan en staan waar je wilt en bent niet afhankelijk van taxi’s of het openbaar vervoer.
Boek een accommodatie
Wie vakantie wil vieren in Spanje, moet ook een accommodatie boeken. Doordat het zo’n populair vakantieland is, zijn er volop mogelijkheden. Toch is het niet slim om maar zo een verblijf te boeken. De accommodatie moet namelijk passen bij je vakantieplannen en het gezelschap waarmee je reist. Gaan er kinderen mee? Dan is een accommodatie met zwembad aan te raden. Kijk overigens niet alleen naar de ligging en faciliteiten, maar lees ook altijd reviews. Je weet zo wat je kunt verwachten.

Met de auto op reis gaan blijft één van de fijnste manieren om vrijheid te voelen. Je bepaalt zelf je tempo, je route en je stops. Geen wachtrijen, geen bagagelimieten, geen vaste schema’s. Maar die vrijheid werkt alleen echt als je je reis goed aanpakt. Zonder voorbereiding wordt een roadtrip al snel vermoeiend in plaats van ontspannend. Met de juiste mindset en een paar slimme keuzes maak je van elke rit een onvergetelijke ervaring.
Begin met een realistische planning
Veel stress ontstaat al vóór vertrek. Te veel kilometers per dag, te weinig rustmomenten en te hoge verwachtingen.
Probeer je reisdagen niet voller te proppen dan nodig. Vier tot zes uur rijden per dag is voor de meeste mensen meer dan genoeg. Zo hou je tijd over om onderweg te stoppen, iets te eten, een wandeling te maken of gewoon even niets te doen.
Plan je grote lijnen, maar laat ruimte voor spontaniteit. Soms is het net die onverwachte afslag die je bij het mooiste uitzicht brengt.
Comfort is belangrijker dan snelheid
Op lange ritten merk je snel wat echt telt: een goede zithouding, weinig rijgeluid en een stabiel gevoel op de weg. Niet hoe snel je gaat, maar hoe ontspannen je aankomt.
Daarom kiezen sommige reizigers bewust voor een tweedehands Audi. Niet om indruk te maken, maar omdat die bekendstaan om hun rustige rijervaring en degelijke afwerking. Zeker op lange snelwegtrajecten kan dat het verschil maken tussen uitgeput aankomen of fris uitstappen.
Elektrisch reizen

Stel: je bent al jaren fan van reizen, van vrijheid op het water of de geur van dennen in een bos en je overweegt om een boot of vakantiehuis te kopen. Het klinkt als de ultieme droom: een eigen stekkie voor weekends en vakanties, zonder telkens iets te huren of in een druk hotel te zitten. Maar voordat je die stap zet, is het slim om eerst goed na te denken.
Waarom een eigen boot of vakantiehuis aantrekkelijk is
Een eigen boot of vakantiehuis heeft veel aantrekkingskracht: het is jouw eigen plek om tot rust te komen, weg van dagelijkse beslommeringen. Je bepaalt zelf wanneer je gaat, met wie, en hoe lang je blijft. Voor veel reizigers voelt het als een rustpunt.
Tegelijkertijd is bezit geen vanzelfsprekendheid: het brengt verplichtingen en kosten mee die je niet moet onderschatten. Een vakantiehuis of boot is geen hotel of huurwoning. Je bent verantwoordelijk voor onderhoud, stalling, verzekering en alle bijkomende lasten. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan onvoorziene uitgaven voor reparaties, extra kosten bij verhuur of seizoensgebonden beperkingen die het gebruik beïnvloeden.

Reken voor een bescheiden vakantiewoning op €3.000–€6.000 vaste lasten per jaar. Voor een middelgrote boot al snel €2.500–€4.000, afhankelijk van gebruik en stalling.
Wat past beter bij jou: boot of vakantiehuis?
Een boot biedt ultieme flexibiliteit. Je kunt meerdere locaties aandoen, je ‘verplaatst’ je vakantieplek als het ware. Dat is perfect voor mensen die houden van avontuur op het water en zich makkelijk kunnen aanpassen. Tegelijkertijd vraagt een boot intensief onderhoud, en zijn de jaarlijkse kosten vaak hoger dan verwacht. Zeker als je er niet zelf veel aan doet.
Een vakantiehuis is stabieler qua investering. Je kiest voor een vaste plek die je naar eigen smaak kunt inrichten en verbeteren. Bovendien kun je het huis mogelijk (deels) verhuren als je er zelf niet bent. De keerzijde: minder mobiliteit, en ook hier zijn er terugkerende kosten die vaak onderschat worden.
Let op: De waardeontwikkeling van een vakantiehuis kan aantrekkelijk zijn, maar dit is sterk afhankelijk van locatie, onderhoud en regelgeving.
Een slimme investering bescherm je met een goede verzekering
Welke keuze je ook maakt, je koopt geen luxeproduct maar een bezit met waarde. En waarde vraagt om bescherming. Het risico op schade door brand, storm, inbraak of ongelukjes is niet te vermijden maar je kunt je er wel goed tegen wapenen.
Daarom is het verstandig om je vanaf het begin goed te laten adviseren over passende verzekeringen. - Verhuren als tussenstap: Als verkoop nog geen optie is, kun je overwegen om (tijdelijk) te verhuren om kosten te dekken. Let dan wel op extra regels, vergunningen en verzekeringseisen.
Tip: Bepaal bij aankoop al wat je ideale gebruikstermijn is. Zo kun je tijdig inspelen op veranderingen en voorkom je dat het bezit een last wordt.
Maak van jouw droom een doordacht plan
Een eigen boot of vakantiehuis kopen is fantastisch. Het kan jouw reislust en behoefte aan vrijheid vervullen. Maar de droom wordt pas echt duurzaam als je realistisch bent over kosten, tijd, onderhoud en verzekeringen.
Neem de tijd om te rekenen, plannen en vergelijken. Kijk of de investering bij je levensstijl past, en maak gebruik van de juiste expertise. Zo wordt je vakantiedroom geen zorgenpost, maar een plek waar je jaar na jaar van kunt genieten.

Gisterenavond mijn laatste Darts wedstrijden gespeeld en waarschijnlijk eindig ik met 27 punten onderaan, op dit moment ben ik 5de van onderen. (maar Barney moet oppassen want de doubles beginnen te vliegen)
Zaterdagnacht vlieg ik naar Brize Norton in de UK en zondagmiddag ben ik in Nederland.
En wat er daarna gaat gebeuren? Nog geen flauw idee!

Afgelopen weekend was weer een lang weekend, gisteren was het the queens birthday geloof ik.
Vanaf zaterdag was de zee bij de pierhead vol met fry (kleine vissen) in grote scholen bijeen. Om de zoveel tijd kwamen de grote roofvissen aanstormen om hun prooien te vangen. Omdat de zee zo helder blauw kun je alles vanaf de pier goed zien en volgen. Ik heb zelfs een tonijn zien zwemmen vanaf de pier. Iemand heeft hem een tijdje aan de haak gehad maar de toijn heeft zich los kunnen maken.
Gisteren is er een tonijn van 110 kg gevangen vanaf een boot met en hengel. Het heeft schijnbaar 45 min geduurd voordat ze de vis uit het water hadden.
Het was dus een groot visfestijn de afgelopen dagen. Zaterdagmiddag heb ik een paar grote visfilets mee naar huisgenomen, gebakken en weer naar de pierhead gebracht om uit te delen aan de vissers. Vonden ze erg lekker.
Totnutoe 4 van 4 dartwedstrijden verloren, dus ik moet nog lang oefenen voordat ik regelmatig 180 gooi.
Oja vorige week is prins Edward, broer van prins Charles hier op school geweest. Hij had een stopover naar de Falklands waar 25jarige herdenking van de falklands oorlog plaatsvond.
Verder blijft het lesgeven best wel moeilijk. een klas gaat enorm moeizaam, omdat er een ontzettend ettertje inzit die de rest meezuigt. De andere klassen vind ik wel redelijk gaan, ze zijn in ieder geval niet vervelend. Er zijn hier nu nog 4 lesweken en dan nog een aantal activiteiten dagen.

De laatste dag van een week vakantie.
Veel gewandeld deze week en weer veel mooie foto's gemaakt.(zie foto's)
(Tante Beb de grote vis is een tonijn. Ze worden hier elke avond binnengehaald.)
Green Mountain is dus echt groen, met bananenplanten, bamboe, raspberry, varens etc. Maar het is zeker geen rainforest!
Verder deze week twee barbeques gehad met heel veel vis en vlees. De mensen eten hier heel veel.
Donderdagochtend meegeholpen met het onkruid wieden uit de plantenbakken met een bedreigd inheemse varensoort en daarna twee wandelingen gemaakt op de berg.
Vrijdagmiddag weer gevist op de rotsen.
Er komen nu nog 6 weken lesgeven en 1,5 week activiteiten en dan is het weer klaar hier.
Pepijn een ticket naar Ascension doet erg veel pounds, vraag maar aan Werner. Maar er wordt hier wel veel gedoken: veel vis, schildpadden, twee scheepswrakken, rotsen etc.
Oja, ik heb me opgegeven voor een Darts competitie, dus: Bas Barney one hundred and eighty, dubble on dubble off.

Goedkope vlucht = weinig eten en drinken, geen leuke films. Maar we klagen niet, het was toch maar 12uurtjes vliegen!
In Düsseldorf overgestegen naar een ander tuig, op naar Berlijn.
Daar aangekomen opgewacht door Helena, volledig in wit kleedje en rode roos.
Vandaag dan door Berlijn wandelen en helemaal onder de indruk geraken!

Kijk dat noem ik nou veel reacties! Dank je wel ieder die even de moeite heeft genomen een berichtje achter te laten op deze site, dat doet me erg goed en is van grote waarde voor mij!
Okay, hier weer een stukje ascension island:
Jawel ik heb deze week weer eens vakantie: midterm holiday.(wanneer had ik voor het laatst vakantie? Tja 3 weken geleden)
Afgelopen zaterdag einde van de middag, meegelopen met de 'hash'. Dat
is een weekelijkse uitgezette wandeltocht van 1 tot 1,5u., met stukken
van de wandelpaden af. De markeringen worden gemaakt door hoopjes
papiersnippers (uit de versnipperaar).
Het was dit keer boven op Green Mountain (800 meter ofzo). Stukken
steil omhoog en omlaag. Het was wel goed te doen.
Na afloop goed eten en drinken bij Garden Cottage boven op de berg.
Ik ben als enige blijven slapen daar op de berg, de anderen zijn naar
huis gegaan. De volgende ochtend is een man me weer komen halen. Ik
had gehoopt sochtends een mooi uitzicht te hebben maar het was helaas
bewolkt.
Zondag middag even op comfortless cove (mooi strandje) met Derrick en
dochtertje Rosa geweest.
Geprobeerd vissen te vangen met een nep aas aan de hengel. Niet
gelukt. Het is erg mooi om vanaf de rotsen in het water te kijken: het
is net een aquarium, veel gekleurde vissen en nog een Hawksbill Turtle
gezien (schijnbaar heel zeldzaam).
Gisteren uitgenodigd voor een Barbeque aan een strand/ beach hut door
Wendy (collega) en Tania and husbands. Was erg gezellig.
Vanochtend een cake voor Wendy gebakken omdat ze vandaag jarig is, ik
had vorige week een paar lekkere fishcakes (ronde schijfjes met
korstje) van haar gehad.
Vanmorgen is de boot (Royal Mail Ship)uit Saint Helena aangekomen en weer uitgevaren. Waarschijnlijk dus weer wat groente en fruit in de winkel vanmiddag.
Het zou misschien een optie voor me kunnen zijn dat ik eind juli ipv terugvlieg naar Engeland, de boot pak naar Saint Helena en vandaaruit naar Zuid-Afrika vaar. Dit is alleen nog maar een gedachte!!
Vanmiddag als het weer iets koeler is ga ik misschien nog even een cratertje
beklimmen.

Alweer de tweede week op dit vreemd maar wel interessant eiland.
De meeste mensen op dit eiland komen van Saint Helena. Je mag aleen maar op dit eiland wonen als je een arbeidscontract hebt. Mensen boven de 65 vindt je hier dan ook niet.
Er zijn mensen die al 40 jaar op dit eiland wonen.
De saint Helena people (saints genoemd) zijn 'mixed race' en hebben een lichtere of donkerdere huidskleur. Als ze onderling praten is hun engels niet te verstaan.
Waarom werken ze hier?
Omdat ze hier relatief veel geld kunnen verdienen. Op Saint Helena kun je max. 70 pound per week verdienen, schijnbaar.
De meeste kinderen op school zijn saints en dat is wel leuk want ik had dat helemaal niet verwacht. Ik geef science les aan leerlingen van 11 - 16 jaar. Kleine groepjes: 5 tot 10 leerlingen.
In het engels lesgeven is best pittig, als je er zo ineens in moet duiken en onderwerpen moet behandelen waar ik niet veel vanaf weet: rock cycle, magnetic induction, etc.
Ze (leerlingen en school) zijn totnutoe wel tevreden geloof ik. Ik heb nog geen klachten gehad en iedereen zegt dat mijn engels goed is, dus daar doe ik het maar mee.
De school is erg goed uitgerust. Veel computers, grote lokalen, veel spullen.
Afgelopen vrijdag hadden we een vrije dag ivm ascension dag (hemelvaartdag)
Met mijn mountainbike van Georgetown naar Two Boats proberen te fietsen. Echter de laatste helling was te zwaar om te fietsen dus die heb ik maar opgelopen.
Vervolgens met de scouts (alle jongens van school)een flinke downhill gedaan, na eerst met een trailer naar bovengebracht te zijn naar the old NASA site aan de oostkant van het eiland. Vandaaruit bergafwaarts schuin over het eiland naar de noordwestkant eindigend op een strandje.
Vervolgens heb ik daar wat mensen ontmoet, die daar zaten te eten en drinken. Een bord 'plo' (curry pilav) voorgeschoteld gekregen en een castle beer. Vervolgens tot het donker werd de nodigde biertjes weggezet ('box it off')die er natuurlijk weer aardig inhakte (vooral de eerste Johan)
Als afsluiter naar de pierhead, waar net verse tonijn omhoog werd gesleept en aan stukken werd gesneden en gelijk wordt afgeleverd aan de kopers. Ik heb een grote lap Tonijn gekregen.
Toen naar het huis van Kevin and Rosi, waar er nog verder werd opgetopt and box off some fresh fried tuna steak, liver and heart.
Verse tonijn, dat moet je geproefd hebben!
om kwart over een lag ik dan eindelijk in mijn bed om vervolgens de volgende ochtend mee te helpen om tafels van school naar de Ascension Day Fair te sjouwen.
Goed hier laat ik het maar weer even bij.

Jawel vanochtend geland op de maan in de atlantische oceaan en ik ben de enige Nederlander op het eiland en in de wijde omtrek denk ik zo.
Ik heb een mooi huisje voor mezelf gekregen met alles erop en eraan.
Soo (ipv Sue), het hoofd van de school is me af komen halen en heeft me naar het huisje gebracht. Vervolgens is ze me om 12u weer op komen halen en zit ik nu op school en heb al een staff meeting en science les meegemaakt.

Ja, het gaat maar weer verder. Twee weken in Nederland en dan maar weer naar "de maan": Ascension Island, een brits eilandje in het midden van de zuid atlantische oceaan tussen Afrika en Zuid-Amerika. 1200 km boven St. Helena. Een vulcanisch eilandje, waar niet zo heel veel is, 1100 inwoners: engelsen.
Vanuit London kreeg ik dit aanbod en ik dacht, tja waarom niet. Drie maanden lesgeven op een engelse school in Science (nooit eerder gedaan).
Ik vertek di 8 mei en kom op 29 juli weer terug.
Zojuist heb ik nog een heleboel foto's van Suriname op deze website gezet en een paar foto's van Brazilie.

Gisterenavond mijn laatste Darts wedstrijden gespeeld en waarschijnlijk eindig ik met 27 punten onderaan, op dit moment ben ik 5de van onderen. (maar Barney moet oppassen want de doubles beginnen te vliegen)
Zaterdagnacht vlieg ik naar Brize Norton in de UK en zondagmiddag ben ik in Nederland.
En wat er daarna gaat gebeuren? Nog geen flauw idee!

Afgelopen weekend was weer een lang weekend, gisteren was het the queens birthday geloof ik.
Vanaf zaterdag was de zee bij de pierhead vol met fry (kleine vissen) in grote scholen bijeen. Om de zoveel tijd kwamen de grote roofvissen aanstormen om hun prooien te vangen. Omdat de zee zo helder blauw kun je alles vanaf de pier goed zien en volgen. Ik heb zelfs een tonijn zien zwemmen vanaf de pier. Iemand heeft hem een tijdje aan de haak gehad maar de toijn heeft zich los kunnen maken.
Gisteren is er een tonijn van 110 kg gevangen vanaf een boot met en hengel. Het heeft schijnbaar 45 min geduurd voordat ze de vis uit het water hadden.
Het was dus een groot visfestijn de afgelopen dagen. Zaterdagmiddag heb ik een paar grote visfilets mee naar huisgenomen, gebakken en weer naar de pierhead gebracht om uit te delen aan de vissers. Vonden ze erg lekker.
Totnutoe 4 van 4 dartwedstrijden verloren, dus ik moet nog lang oefenen voordat ik regelmatig 180 gooi.
Oja vorige week is prins Edward, broer van prins Charles hier op school geweest. Hij had een stopover naar de Falklands waar 25jarige herdenking van de falklands oorlog plaatsvond.
Verder blijft het lesgeven best wel moeilijk. een klas gaat enorm moeizaam, omdat er een ontzettend ettertje inzit die de rest meezuigt. De andere klassen vind ik wel redelijk gaan, ze zijn in ieder geval niet vervelend. Er zijn hier nu nog 4 lesweken en dan nog een aantal activiteiten dagen.

De laatste dag van een week vakantie.
Veel gewandeld deze week en weer veel mooie foto's gemaakt.(zie foto's)
(Tante Beb de grote vis is een tonijn. Ze worden hier elke avond binnengehaald.)
Green Mountain is dus echt groen, met bananenplanten, bamboe, raspberry, varens etc. Maar het is zeker geen rainforest!
Verder deze week twee barbeques gehad met heel veel vis en vlees. De mensen eten hier heel veel.
Donderdagochtend meegeholpen met het onkruid wieden uit de plantenbakken met een bedreigd inheemse varensoort en daarna twee wandelingen gemaakt op de berg.
Vrijdagmiddag weer gevist op de rotsen.
Er komen nu nog 6 weken lesgeven en 1,5 week activiteiten en dan is het weer klaar hier.
Pepijn een ticket naar Ascension doet erg veel pounds, vraag maar aan Werner. Maar er wordt hier wel veel gedoken: veel vis, schildpadden, twee scheepswrakken, rotsen etc.
Oja, ik heb me opgegeven voor een Darts competitie, dus: Bas Barney one hundred and eighty, dubble on dubble off.

[message] => Dat was het dan! Gisterenmorgen in Bangkok opgestegen met LTU naar Düsseldorf.
Goedkope vlucht = weinig eten en drinken, geen leuke films. Maar we klagen niet, het was toch maar 12uurtjes vliegen!
In Düsseldorf overgestegen naar een ander tuig, op naar Berlijn.
Daar aangekomen opgewacht door Helena, volledig in wit kleedje en rode roos.
Vandaag dan door Berlijn wandelen en helemaal onder de indruk geraken!

Kijk dat noem ik nou veel reacties! Dank je wel ieder die even de moeite heeft genomen een berichtje achter te laten op deze site, dat doet me erg goed en is van grote waarde voor mij!
Okay, hier weer een stukje ascension island:
Jawel ik heb deze week weer eens vakantie: midterm holiday.(wanneer had ik voor het laatst vakantie? Tja 3 weken geleden)
Afgelopen zaterdag einde van de middag, meegelopen met de 'hash'. Dat
is een weekelijkse uitgezette wandeltocht van 1 tot 1,5u., met stukken
van de wandelpaden af. De markeringen worden gemaakt door hoopjes
papiersnippers (uit de versnipperaar).
Het was dit keer boven op Green Mountain (800 meter ofzo). Stukken
steil omhoog en omlaag. Het was wel goed te doen.
Na afloop goed eten en drinken bij Garden Cottage boven op de berg.
Ik ben als enige blijven slapen daar op de berg, de anderen zijn naar
huis gegaan. De volgende ochtend is een man me weer komen halen. Ik
had gehoopt sochtends een mooi uitzicht te hebben maar het was helaas
bewolkt.
Zondag middag even op comfortless cove (mooi strandje) met Derrick en
dochtertje Rosa geweest.
Geprobeerd vissen te vangen met een nep aas aan de hengel. Niet
gelukt. Het is erg mooi om vanaf de rotsen in het water te kijken: het
is net een aquarium, veel gekleurde vissen en nog een Hawksbill Turtle
gezien (schijnbaar heel zeldzaam).
Gisteren uitgenodigd voor een Barbeque aan een strand/ beach hut door
Wendy (collega) en Tania and husbands. Was erg gezellig.
Vanochtend een cake voor Wendy gebakken omdat ze vandaag jarig is, ik
had vorige week een paar lekkere fishcakes (ronde schijfjes met
korstje) van haar gehad.
Vanmorgen is de boot (Royal Mail Ship)uit Saint Helena aangekomen en weer uitgevaren. Waarschijnlijk dus weer wat groente en fruit in de winkel vanmiddag.
Het zou misschien een optie voor me kunnen zijn dat ik eind juli ipv terugvlieg naar Engeland, de boot pak naar Saint Helena en vandaaruit naar Zuid-Afrika vaar. Dit is alleen nog maar een gedachte!!
Vanmiddag als het weer iets koeler is ga ik misschien nog even een cratertje
beklimmen.

All right dual? (uitspraak dowl, Saint Helenian language)
Alweer de tweede week op dit vreemd maar wel interessant eiland.
De meeste mensen op dit eiland komen van Saint Helena. Je mag aleen maar op dit eiland wonen als je een arbeidscontract hebt. Mensen boven de 65 vindt je hier dan ook niet.
Er zijn mensen die al 40 jaar op dit eiland wonen.
De saint Helena people (saints genoemd) zijn 'mixed race' en hebben een lichtere of donkerdere huidskleur. Als ze onderling praten is hun engels niet te verstaan.
Waarom werken ze hier?
Omdat ze hier relatief veel geld kunnen verdienen. Op Saint Helena kun je max. 70 pound per week verdienen, schijnbaar.
De meeste kinderen op school zijn saints en dat is wel leuk want ik had dat helemaal niet verwacht. Ik geef science les aan leerlingen van 11 - 16 jaar. Kleine groepjes: 5 tot 10 leerlingen.
In het engels lesgeven is best pittig, als je er zo ineens in moet duiken en onderwerpen moet behandelen waar ik niet veel vanaf weet: rock cycle, magnetic induction, etc.
Ze (leerlingen en school) zijn totnutoe wel tevreden geloof ik. Ik heb nog geen klachten gehad en iedereen zegt dat mijn engels goed is, dus daar doe ik het maar mee.
De school is erg goed uitgerust. Veel computers, grote lokalen, veel spullen.
Afgelopen vrijdag hadden we een vrije dag ivm ascension dag (hemelvaartdag)
Met mijn mountainbike van Georgetown naar Two Boats proberen te fietsen. Echter de laatste helling was te zwaar om te fietsen dus die heb ik maar opgelopen.
Vervolgens met de scouts (alle jongens van school)een flinke downhill gedaan, na eerst met een trailer naar bovengebracht te zijn naar the old NASA site aan de oostkant van het eiland. Vandaaruit bergafwaarts schuin over het eiland naar de noordwestkant eindigend op een strandje.
Vervolgens heb ik daar wat mensen ontmoet, die daar zaten te eten en drinken. Een bord 'plo' (curry pilav) voorgeschoteld gekregen en een castle beer. Vervolgens tot het donker werd de nodigde biertjes weggezet ('box it off')die er natuurlijk weer aardig inhakte (vooral de eerste Johan)

Het schooljaar zit erop hier. En het atlantische avontuur zit erop!
Gisterenavond mijn laatste Darts wedstrijden gespeeld en waarschijnlijk eindig ik met 27 punten onderaan, op dit moment ben ik 5de van onderen. (maar Barney moet oppassen want de doubles beginnen te vliegen)
Zaterdagnacht vlieg ik naar Brize Norton in de UK en zondagmiddag ben ik in Nederland.
En wat er daarna gaat gebeuren? Nog geen flauw idee!

Afgelopen weekend was weer een lang weekend, gisteren was het the queens birthday geloof ik.
Vanaf zaterdag was de zee bij de pierhead vol met fry (kleine vissen) in grote scholen bijeen. Om de zoveel tijd kwamen de grote roofvissen aanstormen om hun prooien te vangen. Omdat de zee zo helder blauw kun je alles vanaf de pier goed zien en volgen. Ik heb zelfs een tonijn zien zwemmen vanaf de pier. Iemand heeft hem een tijdje aan de haak gehad maar de toijn heeft zich los kunnen maken.
Gisteren is er een tonijn van 110 kg gevangen vanaf een boot met en hengel. Het heeft schijnbaar 45 min geduurd voordat ze de vis uit het water hadden.
Het was dus een groot visfestijn de afgelopen dagen. Zaterdagmiddag heb ik een paar grote visfilets mee naar huisgenomen, gebakken en weer naar de pierhead gebracht om uit te delen aan de vissers. Vonden ze erg lekker.
Totnutoe 4 van 4 dartwedstrijden verloren, dus ik moet nog lang oefenen voordat ik regelmatig 180 gooi.
Oja vorige week is prins Edward, broer van prins Charles hier op school geweest. Hij had een stopover naar de Falklands waar 25jarige herdenking van de falklands oorlog plaatsvond.
Verder blijft het lesgeven best wel moeilijk. een klas gaat enorm moeizaam, omdat er een ontzettend ettertje inzit die de rest meezuigt. De andere klassen vind ik wel redelijk gaan, ze zijn in ieder geval niet vervelend. Er zijn hier nu nog 4 lesweken en dan nog een aantal activiteiten dagen.

De laatste dag van een week vakantie.
Veel gewandeld deze week en weer veel mooie foto's gemaakt.(zie foto's)
(Tante Beb de grote vis is een tonijn. Ze worden hier elke avond binnengehaald.)
Green Mountain is dus echt groen, met bananenplanten, bamboe, raspberry, varens etc. Maar het is zeker geen rainforest!
Verder deze week twee barbeques gehad met heel veel vis en vlees. De mensen eten hier heel veel.
Donderdagochtend meegeholpen met het onkruid wieden uit de plantenbakken met een bedreigd inheemse varensoort en daarna twee wandelingen gemaakt op de berg.
Vrijdagmiddag weer gevist op de rotsen.
Er komen nu nog 6 weken lesgeven en 1,5 week activiteiten en dan is het weer klaar hier.
Pepijn een ticket naar Ascension doet erg veel pounds, vraag maar aan Werner. Maar er wordt hier wel veel gedoken: veel vis, schildpadden, twee scheepswrakken, rotsen etc.
Oja, ik heb me opgegeven voor een Darts competitie, dus: Bas Barney one hundred and eighty, dubble on dubble off.

[message] => Dat was het dan! Gisterenmorgen in Bangkok opgestegen met LTU naar Düsseldorf.
Goedkope vlucht = weinig eten en drinken, geen leuke films. Maar we klagen niet, het was toch maar 12uurtjes vliegen!
In Düsseldorf overgestegen naar een ander tuig, op naar Berlijn.
Daar aangekomen opgewacht door Helena, volledig in wit kleedje en rode roos.
Vandaag dan door Berlijn wandelen en helemaal onder de indruk geraken!
Berlijn is HIP!

Kijk dat noem ik nou veel reacties! Dank je wel ieder die even de moeite heeft genomen een berichtje achter te laten op deze site, dat doet me erg goed en is van grote waarde voor mij!
Okay, hier weer een stukje ascension island:
Jawel ik heb deze week weer eens vakantie: midterm holiday.(wanneer had ik voor het laatst vakantie? Tja 3 weken geleden)
Afgelopen zaterdag einde van de middag, meegelopen met de 'hash'. Dat
is een weekelijkse uitgezette wandeltocht van 1 tot 1,5u., met stukken
van de wandelpaden af. De markeringen worden gemaakt door hoopjes
papiersnippers (uit de versnipperaar).
Het was dit keer boven op Green Mountain (800 meter ofzo). Stukken
steil omhoog en omlaag. Het was wel goed te doen.
Na afloop goed eten en drinken bij Garden Cottage boven op de berg.
Ik ben als enige blijven slapen daar op de berg, de anderen zijn naar
huis gegaan. De volgende ochtend is een man me weer komen halen. Ik
had gehoopt sochtends een mooi uitzicht te hebben maar het was helaas
bewolkt.
Zondag middag even op comfortless cove (mooi strandje) met Derrick en
dochtertje Rosa geweest.
Geprobeerd vissen te vangen met een nep aas aan de hengel. Niet
gelukt. Het is erg mooi om vanaf de rotsen in het water te kijken: het
is net een aquarium, veel gekleurde vissen en nog een Hawksbill Turtle
gezien (schijnbaar heel zeldzaam).
Gisteren uitgenodigd voor een Barbeque aan een strand/ beach hut door
Wendy (collega) en Tania and husbands. Was erg gezellig.
Vanochtend een cake voor Wendy gebakken omdat ze vandaag jarig is, ik
had vorige week een paar lekkere fishcakes (ronde schijfjes met
korstje) van haar gehad.
Vanmorgen is de boot (Royal Mail Ship)uit Saint Helena aangekomen en weer uitgevaren. Waarschijnlijk dus weer wat groente en fruit in de winkel vanmiddag.
Het zou misschien een optie voor me kunnen zijn dat ik eind juli ipv terugvlieg naar Engeland, de boot pak naar Saint Helena en vandaaruit naar Zuid-Afrika vaar. Dit is alleen nog maar een gedachte!!
Vanmiddag als het weer iets koeler is ga ik misschien nog even een cratertje
beklimmen.

All right dual? (uitspraak dowl, Saint Helenian language)
Alweer de tweede week op dit vreemd maar wel interessant eiland.
De meeste mensen op dit eiland komen van Saint Helena. Je mag aleen maar op dit eiland wonen als je een arbeidscontract hebt. Mensen boven de 65 vindt je hier dan ook niet.
Er zijn mensen die al 40 jaar op dit eiland wonen.
De saint Helena people (saints genoemd) zijn 'mixed race' en hebben een lichtere of donkerdere huidskleur. Als ze onderling praten is hun engels niet te verstaan.
Waarom werken ze hier?
Omdat ze hier relatief veel geld kunnen verdienen. Op Saint Helena kun je max. 70 pound per week verdienen, schijnbaar.
De meeste kinderen op school zijn saints en dat is wel leuk want ik had dat helemaal niet verwacht. Ik geef science les aan leerlingen van 11 - 16 jaar. Kleine groepjes: 5 tot 10 leerlingen.
In het engels lesgeven is best pittig, als je er zo ineens in moet duiken en onderwerpen moet behandelen waar ik niet veel vanaf weet: rock cycle, magnetic induction, etc.
Ze (leerlingen en school) zijn totnutoe wel tevreden geloof ik. Ik heb nog geen klachten gehad en iedereen zegt dat mijn engels goed is, dus daar doe ik het maar mee.
De school is erg goed uitgerust. Veel computers, grote lokalen, veel spullen.
Afgelopen vrijdag hadden we een vrije dag ivm ascension dag (hemelvaartdag)
Met mijn mountainbike van Georgetown naar Two Boats proberen te fietsen. Echter de laatste helling was te zwaar om te fietsen dus die heb ik maar opgelopen.
Vervolgens met de scouts (alle jongens van school)een flinke downhill gedaan, na eerst met een trailer naar bovengebracht te zijn naar the old NASA site aan de oostkant van het eiland. Vandaaruit bergafwaarts schuin over het eiland naar de noordwestkant eindigend op een strandje.
Vervolgens heb ik daar wat mensen ontmoet, die daar zaten te eten en drinken. Een bord 'plo' (curry pilav) voorgeschoteld gekregen en een castle beer. Vervolgens tot het donker werd de nodigde biertjes weggezet ('box it off')die er natuurlijk weer aardig inhakte (vooral de eerste Johan)
Als afsluiter naar de pierhead, waar net verse tonijn omhoog werd gesleept en aan stukken werd gesneden en gelijk wordt afgeleverd aan de kopers. Ik heb een grote lap Tonijn gekregen.
Toen naar het huis van Kevin and Rosi, waar er nog verder werd opgetopt and box off some fresh fried tuna steak, liver and heart.
Verse tonijn, dat moet je geproefd hebben!
om kwart over een lag ik dan eindelijk in mijn bed om vervolgens de volgende ochtend mee te helpen om tafels van school naar de Ascension Day Fair te sjouwen.
Goed hier laat ik het maar weer even bij.

Ik zou het erg leuk vinden als je een berichtje plaatst!!!! Het kost veel werk om al die fotoos te plaatsen en ik vind het wel aardig om te weten hoeveel mensen en wie eigenlijk op deze site komen kijken.

Jawel vanochtend geland op de maan in de atlantische oceaan en ik ben de enige Nederlander op het eiland en in de wijde omtrek denk ik zo.
Ik heb een mooi huisje voor mezelf gekregen met alles erop en eraan.
Soo (ipv Sue), het hoofd van de school is me af komen halen en heeft me naar het huisje gebracht. Vervolgens is ze me om 12u weer op komen halen en zit ik nu op school en heb al een staff meeting en science les meegemaakt.

Ja, het gaat maar weer verder. Twee weken in Nederland en dan maar weer naar "de maan": Ascension Island, een brits eilandje in het midden van de zuid atlantische oceaan tussen Afrika en Zuid-Amerika. 1200 km boven St. Helena. Een vulcanisch eilandje, waar niet zo heel veel is, 1100 inwoners: engelsen.
Vanuit London kreeg ik dit aanbod en ik dacht, tja waarom niet. Drie maanden lesgeven op een engelse school in Science (nooit eerder gedaan).
