Wat een teleurstelling: je vlucht is vertraagd of geannuleerd. Dat is natuurlijk niet waar je op zit te wachten aan het begin van je vakantie. Hoe vervelend het ook is, het betekent niet gelijk dat je je geld kwijt bent of dat je niet meer op vakantie kunt. Je hebt namelijk in veel gevallen recht op compensatie en hulp. In dit artikel leggen we je uit hoe het werkt.Algemene regels en rechten
Ben je op het vliegveld en kom je erachter dat je vlucht vertraagd, geannuleerd of overboekt is? De luchtvaartmaatschappij is na 2 uur vertraging verplicht om je te helpen met het:
- Verzorgen van eten en drinken;
- Sturen van twee e-mails of het voeren van twee telefoongesprekken, mocht je zelf geen internet of bereik hebben;
- Organiseren van een overnachting of transfer als dit noodzakelijk is. Dit telt trouwens niet als de luchtvaartmaatschappij je 2 weken van tevoren op de hoogte heeft gebracht van de vertraging of annulering.
Duurt de vertraging langer dan 5 uur? Dan mag je afzien van de vlucht en de volledige ticketkosten terugvragen. Dit moet binnen 7 dagen terugbetaald worden door de luchtvaartmaatschappij.
Als de vlucht geannuleerd is, mag je kiezen tussen terugbetaling en een nieuw ticket voor een andere vlucht. Een andere vlucht is de eerstvolgende vlucht waar een plekje vrij is. Heb je op je vliegreis een tussenstop? Dan heb je ook recht op een transfer. Bijvoorbeeld als je naar verre landen zoals Thailand reist, waarbij je vaak een of twee tussenstops hebt.
Compensatie
In veel gevallen heb je bij vertraging of annulering recht op compensatie van de luchtvaartmaatschappij. Zij geven vaak zelf een termijn voor de terugbetaling. Bent u binnen deze termijn niet terugbetaald door de luchtvaartmaatschappij? Dan kunt u een claim indienen bij de kantonrechter. Doe dit wel binnen 2 jaar, aangezien het recht op compensatie hierna vaak verloopt.
Moet je door persoonlijke omstandigheden je vlucht annuleren? Dan zal de luchtvaartmaatschappij dit meestal niet vergoeden. Wel kan je eventueel gecompenseerd worden door je reisverzekering.
Hiervoor moet je een annuleringsverzekering hebben afgesloten, aangezien een normale reisverzekering annuleringen en vertragingen niet altijd standaard dekt. Ben je op zoek naar een passende verzekering voordat je op vakantie gaat? Je kan verschillende aanbieders van een reisverzekering vergelijken, om te zien welke het beste bij je wensen en voorkeuren past.
Wanneer heb je geen recht op een schadevergoeding?
Er zijn natuurlijk gevallen waarin de luchtvaartmaatschappij niet verantwoordelijk gehouden kan worden voor annulering of vertraging. Bijvoorbeeld wanneer u zelf te laat aankomt, of als het komt door slecht weer.
Veiligheidsredenen, zoals een bommelding of gevaar op de bestemming zelf, kunnen er ook voor zorgen dat de vlucht vertraagd of geannuleerd wordt zonder schadevergoeding. Medische noodgevallen (bijvoorbeeld als er tijdens het boarden iemand onwel wordt) vallen hier ook onder.
Loop je vakantie niet mis
Een vertraagde of geannuleerde vlucht is natuurlijk niet fijn. In veel gevallen kun je hiervoor wel gecompenseerd worden. Zo kom je hopelijk alsnog snel op je bestemming zodat je kunt genieten van een welverdiende vakantie. Check bij annulering of vertraging van je vlucht altijd wat je rechten zijn, zodat je geen compensatie of hulp misloopt.

Verschillende modellen SUV's voor een roadtrip
Bepalend voor de keuze die je maakt bij de aanschaf van een nieuwe auto voor je roadtrip is de wijze waarop je overnacht. Wil je in de auto zelf overnachten, dan heb je al snel een camper of bijvoorbeeld omgebouwde VW Transporter nodig. Kies je voor een overnachting op de camping of in hotels? In dat geval volstaat een SUV, die je voldoende ruimte biedt voor je tent en andere spullen. De Toyota RAV4 werd al als voorbeeld genoemd van zo'n SUV. De auto is niet goedkoop, maar wel ontzettend praktisch en degelijk. Dat laatste komt van pas, wanneer je onderweg onverhoopt geconfronteerd wordt met een stukjeoff-roadrijden. Soms is het noodzakelijk om de mooiste plekjes te kunnen bereiken! Je wilt ze niet over moeten slaan, omdat je auto niet krachtig genoeg is.
Voordelig geprijsde Citroën C5 Aircross
Een paar duizend euro goedkoper dan de Toyota RAV4 is de Citroën C5 Aircross. Het model is zeer comfortabel en daarmee uitermate geschikt voor langere stukken. Aan de binnenzijde is het model ruim genoeg om een tent mee te nemen. Veel mensen zullen bij het plannen van hun roadtrip niet direct denken aan een Citroën.
Naast de genoemde modellen zijn ook de Skoda Superb Combi en de Volvo V60 Cross Country voorbeelden van auto’s die zich uitstekend lenen voor een roadtrip door Europa.
Camper of een omgebouwde VW Transporter
De afgelopen jaren schaffen steeds meer Nederlanders een camper of een omgebouwd busje, vaak een Transporter van Volkswagen, aan. Een camper geeft je ontzettend veel vrijheid, omdat je onafhankelijk van een hotel, camping of appartement kunt overnachten. Er zijn in veel Europese landen camperplaatsen te vinden langs de belangrijkste wegen. Het voordeel van een VW Transporter is dat deze iets compacter is. Zeker wanneer je met z’n tweeën op reis gaat, volstaat dit model vaak. Niet alleen makkelijker met het parkeren van het voertuig, ook heb je er naast je reguliere autorijbewijs geen aanvullend rijbewijs voor nodig. Bij een camper is dat in sommige gevallen wel noodzakelijk.
Volkswagen Transporter vaak goedkoper dan een camper
Daarnaast geldt dat een omgebouwde VW Transporter over het algemeen fors goedkoper is dan een camper. Ben je zelf erg handig? In dat geval zou je een Volkswagen Transporter kunnen kopen om deze vervolgens zelf om te bouwen tot een volwaardige accommodatie voor je roadtrip. Dat bespaart veel geld! Een alternatief is het opknappen van een eerder omgebouwde bus. Op het internet vind je verschillende websites waar deze omgebouwde busjes te koop worden aangeboden. Kijk er eens rond, om te zien of jou dit trekt!

Vertelden we al dat we overnachten in een heel comfortabel huis met zelfs een zwembad naast ons terras? Dat is natuurlijk een enorme luxe, zeker in Ghana. Een actief gemeentelid van Nativity woont er en stelt haar huis open voor de complete delegatie. Wij waarderen dat zeer, het is prettig om als delegatie bij elkaar te zijn. Aan de andere kant benadrukt ons luxe verblijf nog eens extra hoe welvarend wij zijn in vergelijking met veel Ghanezen. Het voelt soms gênant om in een restaurant te eten, wetend dat een compleet gezin van dat geld wel een maand of langer kan eten en dan ook misschien ook nog het schoolgeld van de kinderen en de doktersrekening ermee kan betalen.
We ontmoeten veel gastvrijheid en oprechte hartelijkheid van veel mensen, het lijkt of de ongelijkwaardige materiële verdeling voor hen absoluut niet de boventoon voert. Dat is bewonderenswaardig en mooi, het maakt vriendschap mogelijk ondanks de verschillen.

Dinsdagmorgen vertrekken we in alle vroegte naar Kumasi. Een tocht van 240 kilometer over een bij tijden heel chaotische weg, alle reden om God te bidden voor een behouden aankomst. Nog voor de middag worden we ondergedompeld in hetAshanti Koninkrijk. We horen veel over kente, cacaobonen, Ashanti Kings en niet te vergeten de Queen Mothers. Voor twee nachten logeren we op een bijzondere plek: het guesthouse van de Basel Mission van de Presbyteriaanse kerk in Ghana.
Het optrekken met Nii Nai, Joshua, Nii Laaye en Samuel is essentieel, het maakt dat we ons nauwelijks of niet toerist voelen. We leren over Ghana en bouwen vooral aan onze vriendschap.
Ondertussen ontmoeten we, ook in Kumasi, diverse Ghanezen die ooit met een delegatie naar Nederland kwamen, zoals Wisdom, Isaac, young Isaac, Love, Daniel, Samilia en Genevive. Er is al zoveel opgebouwd.

Nativity in alle stilte, midden op de dag, hoe bijzonder is dat. Dagelijks zijn we meerdere uren in en rond de kerk te vinden. Pratend, etend, rondhangend en bijna altijd is er wel iemand in de kerk. Vaak een groep met een vast programma, maar ook gewoon mensen zonder programma.
Het is een heel verschil met hoe we nu hier zijn en hoe we vorige week hier waren. We zitten relaxed te wachten, hoewel het veertig minuten over de afgesproken tijd is..... Sommige schoolkinderen komen wat bij ons kijken, de meesten spelen zoals anders. De afgelopen week hebben we veel gemeenteleden begroet en veel contacten gelegd. We hopen de komende week met elkaar vormen te bedenken hoe we deze contacten kunnen vasthouden als we weer terug zijn in Utrecht.En ook hoe we het kunnen uitbouwen naar buiten ons viertal. Want het is al voor ons duidelijk geworden: de vriendschapsband is waardevol.

Onze tijd hier is vol van uiteenlopende indrukken, van uitersten. Het ene moment loop je, als een ware toerist, tussen de kraampjes op de ‘arts and crafts market’ en even later sta je in een van de kerkers waar eeuwenlang slaafgemaakte Afrikanen werden opgesloten alvorens als handelswaar te worden verscheept naar de plantages aan de andere kant van de oceaan. In de afgelopen dagen bezochten we zowel Osu Castle in Accra als Elmina Castle, zo’n 150 km naar het westen. En hoewel het natuurlijk niet onbekend is, dat de Nederlanders een forse rol hebben gespeeld in de eeuwenlange mensenhandel, komt dat besef op deze plekken keihard binnen. In de kerkers, in de slaapkamer van de gouverneur en in de kerk, die in beide forten gebouwd is recht boven de kerkers. En bij de ‘door of no return’, het laatste dat de slaafgemaakten zagen van Afrika. De plek waar zij hun naam en daarmee hun identiteit verloren. Op verschillende plaatsen is die deur inmiddels veranderd in een ‘door of return’, waarmee nakomelingen van slaafgemaakte Afrikanen hun voorouders eren.
Dankzij de stuurmanskunsten van chauffeur Samuel bereikten we in de loop van de avond weer veilig ons logeeradres, ondanks verkeersdrukte en vele hobbels en kuilen in het wegennet tussen Accra en Elmina.

Niet eerder zijn we met zoveel bagage terug naar huis gegaan. Uiteraard met een flinke Ghanese voedselvoorziening (hamsteren!!) maar ook met mooie dingen voor in het nieuwe huis in Engeland. We rijden met twee wagens naar het vliegveld vandaag (onderweg as we speak). De kinderen doen een Japanse powernap in de auto. Rond 22:30 uur zal het vliegtuig vertrekken richting London Heathrow. We hebben het twee maanden enorm naar ons zin gehad. Genoten van de vrijheid, geen stress van werk en mooie dingen gezien en meegemaakt.
Vertrekken is altijd moeilijk, voor Charles omdat hij zijn moedertje moet achterlaten, de kinderen oma en voor mij omdat Ghana zich gewoonweg in mijn hart heeft genesteld.
We have never gone back home with this amount of luggage. Of course we are bringing back the necessary Ghanaian culinary goodies but we also got our hands on some nice items for our new home in England. We are driving to the airport with two cars (on the way as we speak). The kids are taking a Japanese powernap. Departure is around 22:30 local time. We have had a great time the last two months. We have enjoyed the freedom, not having any work related stress and we have seen and experienced wonderful things. Saying goodbye is always difficult, Charles has to leave his mum behind, the kids their grandma and for me because Ghana nestled itself in my heart.

De laatste dagen van onze reis hebben we de verjaardag gevierd van tante Roselyn, ze is 50 geworden! De voorbereidingen voor haar verjaardagsmaal begon al vroeg. We zijn in de avond wat gaan drinken aan de zee. Maandag hebben we de laatste inkopen gedaan in Accra om mee te nemen naar huis. Ook hebben we foto’s genomen bij Black Star Square. Dinsdag zullen we alles gaan inpakken, woensdag avond vliegen we terug naar Londen.
During the last days of our trip we celebrated auntie Roselyn’s birthday, she turned 50! The preparations for her birthday meal started early in the morning. In the evening we went for a drink at the beach. We went to Accra to get the last things on our shopping list for home. We also took a few pictures at Black Star Square. Packing will start on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening we will fly back to London.

Na ons bezoek aan Kumasi zijn we terug naar het zuiden gereden, naar Cape Coast. We hebben daar een aantal ontspannen dagen gehad in het KoSa beach resort. We hebben volop van het strand kunnen genieten en zijn naar het regenwoud (Kakum National Park) geweest om de canopy walk te doen. Charles had als verrassing nog een traditional foto shoot geregeld voor de kinderen. Op de laatste dag zijn we naar Elmina gegaan en hebben daar de Nederlandse begraafplaats bezocht. Nog een paar dagen en dan zitten onze twee maanden Ghana er weer op.
After our trip to Kumasi we drove back south, to Cape Coast. We’ve had some laid back days. We stayed at the KoSa beach resort. We enjoyed the beach to the fullest and went to the rainforest (Kakum National Park) to do the canopy walk. Charles arranged a nice surprise, a traditional photo shoot for the kids. On the last day we went to Elmina and visited the Dutch cemetery. Just a few days left of our two month stay in Ghana.

We zijn een paar dagen in ‘The garden city’ Kumasi! We slapen in het Tumi Hostel. Een bijzonder hostel met ‘women empowerment’ als doel. De vrouwen runnen het hostel, geven cursussen en maken de mooiste creaties van lokale kente en de bekende Dutch wax stoffen. We hebben de dierentuin gezien, de beroemde Kejetia market, het paleis van de Ashanti koning en zijn naar de wijk gegaan waar hout wordt bewerkt.
We are spending a few days in ‘The garden city’ Kumasi! We are staying at Tumi Hostel. It’s a special hostel with ‘women empowerment’ as a goal. The women run the hostel, organize courses and make the most beautiful creations with the local kente and well known Dutch wax fabrics. We have seen the zoo, the famous Kejetia market, the Ashanti king palace and went to the woodcarving village in the city.

Twee van oma’s kittens zijn verdwenen in de nacht. Er is een andere kitten terug gekomen… wit met blauwe oogjes. Erg mager en een beetje vies is hij aan komen waaien. Gelukkig laat mama kat de kitten drinken en we hebben hem gewassen. Hij hoort er helemaal bij. We kregen ook ander baby bezoek, neefje Helmond kwam langs.
Two of grandma’s kittens disappeared overnight. A different came back instead… white with blue eyes. He arrived very skinny and dirty. Luckily mommy cat lets him drink her milk and we gave him a bath. We also had another baby visit, cousin Helmond stopped by.

Op de dagen dat de kinderen naar school gaan zijn we meestal thuis. We hebben dan de tijd om kleding te wassen (dat doen we hier met de hand) en gaan soms even naar de markt voor boodschappen. De kip van oma heeft kuikens gekregen!

We zijn naar Adidome gereden om op bezoek te gaan. De rit was al reden genoeg om het te bestempelen als een leuke dag. Mooie omgeving, palm wijn, lekker eten en watermeloen op de terug weg.

Vertelden we al dat we overnachten in een heel comfortabel huis met zelfs een zwembad naast ons terras? Dat is natuurlijk een enorme luxe, zeker in Ghana. Een actief gemeentelid van Nativity woont er en stelt haar huis open voor de complete delegatie. Wij waarderen dat zeer, het is prettig om als delegatie bij elkaar te zijn. Aan de andere kant benadrukt ons luxe verblijf nog eens extra hoe welvarend wij zijn in vergelijking met veel Ghanezen. Het voelt soms gênant om in een restaurant te eten, wetend dat een compleet gezin van dat geld wel een maand of langer kan eten en dan ook misschien ook nog het schoolgeld van de kinderen en de doktersrekening ermee kan betalen.
We ontmoeten veel gastvrijheid en oprechte hartelijkheid van veel mensen, het lijkt of de ongelijkwaardige materiële verdeling voor hen absoluut niet de boventoon voert. Dat is bewonderenswaardig en mooi, het maakt vriendschap mogelijk ondanks de verschillen.

Dinsdagmorgen vertrekken we in alle vroegte naar Kumasi. Een tocht van 240 kilometer over een bij tijden heel chaotische weg, alle reden om God te bidden voor een behouden aankomst. Nog voor de middag worden we ondergedompeld in hetAshanti Koninkrijk. We horen veel over kente, cacaobonen, Ashanti Kings en niet te vergeten de Queen Mothers. Voor twee nachten logeren we op een bijzondere plek: het guesthouse van de Basel Mission van de Presbyteriaanse kerk in Ghana.
Het optrekken met Nii Nai, Joshua, Nii Laaye en Samuel is essentieel, het maakt dat we ons nauwelijks of niet toerist voelen. We leren over Ghana en bouwen vooral aan onze vriendschap.
Ondertussen ontmoeten we, ook in Kumasi, diverse Ghanezen die ooit met een delegatie naar Nederland kwamen, zoals Wisdom, Isaac, young Isaac, Love, Daniel, Samilia en Genevive. Er is al zoveel opgebouwd.

Nativity in alle stilte, midden op de dag, hoe bijzonder is dat. Dagelijks zijn we meerdere uren in en rond de kerk te vinden. Pratend, etend, rondhangend en bijna altijd is er wel iemand in de kerk. Vaak een groep met een vast programma, maar ook gewoon mensen zonder programma.
Het is een heel verschil met hoe we nu hier zijn en hoe we vorige week hier waren. We zitten relaxed te wachten, hoewel het veertig minuten over de afgesproken tijd is..... Sommige schoolkinderen komen wat bij ons kijken, de meesten spelen zoals anders. De afgelopen week hebben we veel gemeenteleden begroet en veel contacten gelegd. We hopen de komende week met elkaar vormen te bedenken hoe we deze contacten kunnen vasthouden als we weer terug zijn in Utrecht.En ook hoe we het kunnen uitbouwen naar buiten ons viertal. Want het is al voor ons duidelijk geworden: de vriendschapsband is waardevol.

Onze tijd hier is vol van uiteenlopende indrukken, van uitersten. Het ene moment loop je, als een ware toerist, tussen de kraampjes op de ‘arts and crafts market’ en even later sta je in een van de kerkers waar eeuwenlang slaafgemaakte Afrikanen werden opgesloten alvorens als handelswaar te worden verscheept naar de plantages aan de andere kant van de oceaan. In de afgelopen dagen bezochten we zowel Osu Castle in Accra als Elmina Castle, zo’n 150 km naar het westen. En hoewel het natuurlijk niet onbekend is, dat de Nederlanders een forse rol hebben gespeeld in de eeuwenlange mensenhandel, komt dat besef op deze plekken keihard binnen. In de kerkers, in de slaapkamer van de gouverneur en in de kerk, die in beide forten gebouwd is recht boven de kerkers. En bij de ‘door of no return’, het laatste dat de slaafgemaakten zagen van Afrika. De plek waar zij hun naam en daarmee hun identiteit verloren. Op verschillende plaatsen is die deur inmiddels veranderd in een ‘door of return’, waarmee nakomelingen van slaafgemaakte Afrikanen hun voorouders eren.
Dankzij de stuurmanskunsten van chauffeur Samuel bereikten we in de loop van de avond weer veilig ons logeeradres, ondanks verkeersdrukte en vele hobbels en kuilen in het wegennet tussen Accra en Elmina.

Niet eerder zijn we met zoveel bagage terug naar huis gegaan. Uiteraard met een flinke Ghanese voedselvoorziening (hamsteren!!) maar ook met mooie dingen voor in het nieuwe huis in Engeland. We rijden met twee wagens naar het vliegveld vandaag (onderweg as we speak). De kinderen doen een Japanse powernap in de auto. Rond 22:30 uur zal het vliegtuig vertrekken richting London Heathrow. We hebben het twee maanden enorm naar ons zin gehad. Genoten van de vrijheid, geen stress van werk en mooie dingen gezien en meegemaakt.
Vertrekken is altijd moeilijk, voor Charles omdat hij zijn moedertje moet achterlaten, de kinderen oma en voor mij omdat Ghana zich gewoonweg in mijn hart heeft genesteld.
We have never gone back home with this amount of luggage. Of course we are bringing back the necessary Ghanaian culinary goodies but we also got our hands on some nice items for our new home in England. We are driving to the airport with two cars (on the way as we speak). The kids are taking a Japanese powernap. Departure is around 22:30 local time. We have had a great time the last two months. We have enjoyed the freedom, not having any work related stress and we have seen and experienced wonderful things. Saying goodbye is always difficult, Charles has to leave his mum behind, the kids their grandma and for me because Ghana nestled itself in my heart.

De laatste dagen van onze reis hebben we de verjaardag gevierd van tante Roselyn, ze is 50 geworden! De voorbereidingen voor haar verjaardagsmaal begon al vroeg. We zijn in de avond wat gaan drinken aan de zee. Maandag hebben we de laatste inkopen gedaan in Accra om mee te nemen naar huis. Ook hebben we foto’s genomen bij Black Star Square. Dinsdag zullen we alles gaan inpakken, woensdag avond vliegen we terug naar Londen.
During the last days of our trip we celebrated auntie Roselyn’s birthday, she turned 50! The preparations for her birthday meal started early in the morning. In the evening we went for a drink at the beach. We went to Accra to get the last things on our shopping list for home. We also took a few pictures at Black Star Square. Packing will start on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening we will fly back to London.

Na ons bezoek aan Kumasi zijn we terug naar het zuiden gereden, naar Cape Coast. We hebben daar een aantal ontspannen dagen gehad in het KoSa beach resort. We hebben volop van het strand kunnen genieten en zijn naar het regenwoud (Kakum National Park) geweest om de canopy walk te doen. Charles had als verrassing nog een traditional foto shoot geregeld voor de kinderen. Op de laatste dag zijn we naar Elmina gegaan en hebben daar de Nederlandse begraafplaats bezocht. Nog een paar dagen en dan zitten onze twee maanden Ghana er weer op.
After our trip to Kumasi we drove back south, to Cape Coast. We’ve had some laid back days. We stayed at the KoSa beach resort. We enjoyed the beach to the fullest and went to the rainforest (Kakum National Park) to do the canopy walk. Charles arranged a nice surprise, a traditional photo shoot for the kids. On the last day we went to Elmina and visited the Dutch cemetery. Just a few days left of our two month stay in Ghana.

We zijn een paar dagen in ‘The garden city’ Kumasi! We slapen in het Tumi Hostel. Een bijzonder hostel met ‘women empowerment’ als doel. De vrouwen runnen het hostel, geven cursussen en maken de mooiste creaties van lokale kente en de bekende Dutch wax stoffen. We hebben de dierentuin gezien, de beroemde Kejetia market, het paleis van de Ashanti koning en zijn naar de wijk gegaan waar hout wordt bewerkt.
We are spending a few days in ‘The garden city’ Kumasi! We are staying at Tumi Hostel. It’s a special hostel with ‘women empowerment’ as a goal. The women run the hostel, organize courses and make the most beautiful creations with the local kente and well known Dutch wax fabrics. We have seen the zoo, the famous Kejetia market, the Ashanti king palace and went to the woodcarving village in the city.

Twee van oma’s kittens zijn verdwenen in de nacht. Er is een andere kitten terug gekomen… wit met blauwe oogjes. Erg mager en een beetje vies is hij aan komen waaien. Gelukkig laat mama kat de kitten drinken en we hebben hem gewassen. Hij hoort er helemaal bij. We kregen ook ander baby bezoek, neefje Helmond kwam langs.
Two of grandma’s kittens disappeared overnight. A different came back instead… white with blue eyes. He arrived very skinny and dirty. Luckily mommy cat lets him drink her milk and we gave him a bath. We also had another baby visit, cousin Helmond stopped by.

Op de dagen dat de kinderen naar school gaan zijn we meestal thuis. We hebben dan de tijd om kleding te wassen (dat doen we hier met de hand) en gaan soms even naar de markt voor boodschappen. De kip van oma heeft kuikens gekregen!
On the days the kids go to school we stay at home most of the time. We have time to do the laundry (by hand) and sometimes go to the market for groceries. Grandma’s chicks hatched!

We zijn naar Adidome gereden om op bezoek te gaan. De rit was al reden genoeg om het te bestempelen als een leuke dag. Mooie omgeving, palm wijn, lekker eten en watermeloen op de terug weg.

Vertelden we al dat we overnachten in een heel comfortabel huis met zelfs een zwembad naast ons terras? Dat is natuurlijk een enorme luxe, zeker in Ghana. Een actief gemeentelid van Nativity woont er en stelt haar huis open voor de complete delegatie. Wij waarderen dat zeer, het is prettig om als delegatie bij elkaar te zijn. Aan de andere kant benadrukt ons luxe verblijf nog eens extra hoe welvarend wij zijn in vergelijking met veel Ghanezen. Het voelt soms gênant om in een restaurant te eten, wetend dat een compleet gezin van dat geld wel een maand of langer kan eten en dan ook misschien ook nog het schoolgeld van de kinderen en de doktersrekening ermee kan betalen.
We ontmoeten veel gastvrijheid en oprechte hartelijkheid van veel mensen, het lijkt of de ongelijkwaardige materiële verdeling voor hen absoluut niet de boventoon voert. Dat is bewonderenswaardig en mooi, het maakt vriendschap mogelijk ondanks de verschillen.

Dinsdagmorgen vertrekken we in alle vroegte naar Kumasi. Een tocht van 240 kilometer over een bij tijden heel chaotische weg, alle reden om God te bidden voor een behouden aankomst. Nog voor de middag worden we ondergedompeld in hetAshanti Koninkrijk. We horen veel over kente, cacaobonen, Ashanti Kings en niet te vergeten de Queen Mothers. Voor twee nachten logeren we op een bijzondere plek: het guesthouse van de Basel Mission van de Presbyteriaanse kerk in Ghana.
Het optrekken met Nii Nai, Joshua, Nii Laaye en Samuel is essentieel, het maakt dat we ons nauwelijks of niet toerist voelen. We leren over Ghana en bouwen vooral aan onze vriendschap.
Ondertussen ontmoeten we, ook in Kumasi, diverse Ghanezen die ooit met een delegatie naar Nederland kwamen, zoals Wisdom, Isaac, young Isaac, Love, Daniel, Samilia en Genevive. Er is al zoveel opgebouwd.

Nativity in alle stilte, midden op de dag, hoe bijzonder is dat. Dagelijks zijn we meerdere uren in en rond de kerk te vinden. Pratend, etend, rondhangend en bijna altijd is er wel iemand in de kerk. Vaak een groep met een vast programma, maar ook gewoon mensen zonder programma.
Het is een heel verschil met hoe we nu hier zijn en hoe we vorige week hier waren. We zitten relaxed te wachten, hoewel het veertig minuten over de afgesproken tijd is..... Sommige schoolkinderen komen wat bij ons kijken, de meesten spelen zoals anders. De afgelopen week hebben we veel gemeenteleden begroet en veel contacten gelegd. We hopen de komende week met elkaar vormen te bedenken hoe we deze contacten kunnen vasthouden als we weer terug zijn in Utrecht.En ook hoe we het kunnen uitbouwen naar buiten ons viertal. Want het is al voor ons duidelijk geworden: de vriendschapsband is waardevol.

Onze tijd hier is vol van uiteenlopende indrukken, van uitersten. Het ene moment loop je, als een ware toerist, tussen de kraampjes op de ‘arts and crafts market’ en even later sta je in een van de kerkers waar eeuwenlang slaafgemaakte Afrikanen werden opgesloten alvorens als handelswaar te worden verscheept naar de plantages aan de andere kant van de oceaan. In de afgelopen dagen bezochten we zowel Osu Castle in Accra als Elmina Castle, zo’n 150 km naar het westen. En hoewel het natuurlijk niet onbekend is, dat de Nederlanders een forse rol hebben gespeeld in de eeuwenlange mensenhandel, komt dat besef op deze plekken keihard binnen. In de kerkers, in de slaapkamer van de gouverneur en in de kerk, die in beide forten gebouwd is recht boven de kerkers. En bij de ‘door of no return’, het laatste dat de slaafgemaakten zagen van Afrika. De plek waar zij hun naam en daarmee hun identiteit verloren. Op verschillende plaatsen is die deur inmiddels veranderd in een ‘door of return’, waarmee nakomelingen van slaafgemaakte Afrikanen hun voorouders eren.
Dankzij de stuurmanskunsten van chauffeur Samuel bereikten we in de loop van de avond weer veilig ons logeeradres, ondanks verkeersdrukte en vele hobbels en kuilen in het wegennet tussen Accra en Elmina.

Niet eerder zijn we met zoveel bagage terug naar huis gegaan. Uiteraard met een flinke Ghanese voedselvoorziening (hamsteren!!) maar ook met mooie dingen voor in het nieuwe huis in Engeland. We rijden met twee wagens naar het vliegveld vandaag (onderweg as we speak). De kinderen doen een Japanse powernap in de auto. Rond 22:30 uur zal het vliegtuig vertrekken richting London Heathrow. We hebben het twee maanden enorm naar ons zin gehad. Genoten van de vrijheid, geen stress van werk en mooie dingen gezien en meegemaakt.
Vertrekken is altijd moeilijk, voor Charles omdat hij zijn moedertje moet achterlaten, de kinderen oma en voor mij omdat Ghana zich gewoonweg in mijn hart heeft genesteld.
We have never gone back home with this amount of luggage. Of course we are bringing back the necessary Ghanaian culinary goodies but we also got our hands on some nice items for our new home in England. We are driving to the airport with two cars (on the way as we speak). The kids are taking a Japanese powernap. Departure is around 22:30 local time. We have had a great time the last two months. We have enjoyed the freedom, not having any work related stress and we have seen and experienced wonderful things. Saying goodbye is always difficult, Charles has to leave his mum behind, the kids their grandma and for me because Ghana nestled itself in my heart.

De laatste dagen van onze reis hebben we de verjaardag gevierd van tante Roselyn, ze is 50 geworden! De voorbereidingen voor haar verjaardagsmaal begon al vroeg. We zijn in de avond wat gaan drinken aan de zee. Maandag hebben we de laatste inkopen gedaan in Accra om mee te nemen naar huis. Ook hebben we foto’s genomen bij Black Star Square. Dinsdag zullen we alles gaan inpakken, woensdag avond vliegen we terug naar Londen.
During the last days of our trip we celebrated auntie Roselyn’s birthday, she turned 50! The preparations for her birthday meal started early in the morning. In the evening we went for a drink at the beach. We went to Accra to get the last things on our shopping list for home. We also took a few pictures at Black Star Square. Packing will start on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening we will fly back to London.

Na ons bezoek aan Kumasi zijn we terug naar het zuiden gereden, naar Cape Coast. We hebben daar een aantal ontspannen dagen gehad in het KoSa beach resort. We hebben volop van het strand kunnen genieten en zijn naar het regenwoud (Kakum National Park) geweest om de canopy walk te doen. Charles had als verrassing nog een traditional foto shoot geregeld voor de kinderen. Op de laatste dag zijn we naar Elmina gegaan en hebben daar de Nederlandse begraafplaats bezocht. Nog een paar dagen en dan zitten onze twee maanden Ghana er weer op.
After our trip to Kumasi we drove back south, to Cape Coast. We’ve had some laid back days. We stayed at the KoSa beach resort. We enjoyed the beach to the fullest and went to the rainforest (Kakum National Park) to do the canopy walk. Charles arranged a nice surprise, a traditional photo shoot for the kids. On the last day we went to Elmina and visited the Dutch cemetery. Just a few days left of our two month stay in Ghana.

We zijn een paar dagen in ‘The garden city’ Kumasi! We slapen in het Tumi Hostel. Een bijzonder hostel met ‘women empowerment’ als doel. De vrouwen runnen het hostel, geven cursussen en maken de mooiste creaties van lokale kente en de bekende Dutch wax stoffen. We hebben de dierentuin gezien, de beroemde Kejetia market, het paleis van de Ashanti koning en zijn naar de wijk gegaan waar hout wordt bewerkt.
We are spending a few days in ‘The garden city’ Kumasi! We are staying at Tumi Hostel. It’s a special hostel with ‘women empowerment’ as a goal. The women run the hostel, organize courses and make the most beautiful creations with the local kente and well known Dutch wax fabrics. We have seen the zoo, the famous Kejetia market, the Ashanti king palace and went to the woodcarving village in the city.

We zijn naar de beeldschone Volta regio gereden. Daar hebben we een wandeling gemaakt naar de top van Mount Gemi, we hebben de waterval van Ote bezocht en de aapjes van Tafi Atome.

Twee van oma’s kittens zijn verdwenen in de nacht. Er is een andere kitten terug gekomen… wit met blauwe oogjes. Erg mager en een beetje vies is hij aan komen waaien. Gelukkig laat mama kat de kitten drinken en we hebben hem gewassen. Hij hoort er helemaal bij. We kregen ook ander baby bezoek, neefje Helmond kwam langs.
Two of grandma’s kittens disappeared overnight. A different came back instead… white with blue eyes. He arrived very skinny and dirty. Luckily mommy cat lets him drink her milk and we gave him a bath. We also had another baby visit, cousin Helmond stopped by.

Op de dagen dat de kinderen naar school gaan zijn we meestal thuis. We hebben dan de tijd om kleding te wassen (dat doen we hier met de hand) en gaan soms even naar de markt voor boodschappen. De kip van oma heeft kuikens gekregen!
On the days the kids go to school we stay at home most of the time. We have time to do the laundry (by hand) and sometimes go to the market for groceries. Grandma’s chicks hatched!

We zijn naar Adidome gereden om op bezoek te gaan. De rit was al reden genoeg om het te bestempelen als een leuke dag. Mooie omgeving, palm wijn, lekker eten en watermeloen op de terug weg.
We drove to Adidome for a visit. The drive on its own was already enough to call this a lovely day. Beautiful surroundings, palm wine, nice food and watermelon on the way home.
